CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior outfielder Kelvin Agosto was named Big South Conference First Team All-Conference while teammates Merik Carter and Colby Putnam were tabbed Second Team All-Conference and All-Freshman team, respectively, as announced by the league on Tuesday, May 19.
Agosto, one of the most prolific hitters in the conference this season, led the Big South with a .364 batting average that included 75 hits, 10 homeruns, and 55 RBIs. Agosto finished the year with a .578 slugging percentage to go along with .432 on-base percentage. The Vega Baja, P.R. native was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week after a monstrous performance at Oklahoma State, that saw two long balls and seven runs batted in during the Dawgs 19-5 win.
A two-year member of the Gardner-Webb baseball team, Carter earned his first postseason accolade after landing on the second team as a utility player. Starting the season in the outfield, Carter transitioned to the dirt for the Runnin' Bulldogs where he was key in a defense that ranked sixth in the conference with a .967 fielding percentage. On the offensive side, Carter led Gardner-Webb with 11 homeruns while hitting .312. He chipped in 59 hits and 40 RBIs after hitting leadoff for most of the season.
Putnam made his collegiate debut with the Runnin' Bulldogs while putting together a solid season out of the bullpen. The local talent, Putnam finished the year with a 5-2 overall record to go with one save. He also led the team with a 4.94 earned run average, keeping batters at a .262 average for the year. Putnam compiled 40 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched. His best game of the season came at Radford, tossing 6.0 innings while not allowing an earned run.
