Former GWU men's golfer and graduate Scott Wheeler enters is
second season as the graduate assistant coach for both the men'sand women's
golf programs, helping head coach Tee Burton with day-to-dayoperations,
practices, etc.
In 2011-12, his first season on staff, Coach Wheeler saw the
men's and women's golf teams post a combined 12 top-five teamfinishes on the
year. The women's team posted team wins at the WinthropUniversity
Intercollegiate and defeated High Point in head-to-head matchplay at both the
GWU vs. HPU Dual Match and the St. Augustine Surf and Turfevent. The women's team also posted a
third-place finish at the 2012 Big South Women's GolfChampionship, at the
Wofford Tri-Match and at the Great SmokiesIntercollegiate. GWU also took fourth at the Terrier
Intercollegiate and fifth at the Low Country Intercollegiate inthe spring.
On the men's side, the Runnin' Bulldogs took second-place at
both the Donald Ross Intercollegiate in the fall and at the 2012Bash at the
Beach during the spring season. GWU also recorded a third-placeteam finish at
the Hummingbird Intercollegiate and a fourth-place showing atthe Springhill
Suites Intercollegiate in September.
Individually in 2011-12, the Runnin' Bulldogs had three
golfers earn Big South All-Conference honors in Hannah Hellyer,Kristopher Gray
and Daniel Kim. Hellyer, who finished in fifth-place overall atthe 2012 Big
South Women's Golf Championship, medaled at the St. AugustineSurf and Turf,
while Gray medaled at two events on the year - the Donald RossIntercollegiate
and the Hummingbird Intercollegiate. Kim earned his spot on theall-conference
team has he took second-place at the 2012 Big South Men's GolfChampionship event,
tying the Big South Championship and course record with alow-round 63, -9
under par, on day two of the event.
Juniors Sammy Vass, Lauren Smith and Meghan Allum were all
tabbed the Big South Women's Golfer of the Week once during the2011-12 season,
while on the men's side, Gray earned the weekly conference honorthree times.
Also receiving postseason conference honors in 2011-12 wassenior
Courtney Finocchiaro, who joined Gray, on the Big South Men'sand Women's Golf
All-Academic Teams.
Wheeler, who played for Coach Burton and GWU from 2007-11,
was a three-time Big South Conference All-Academic Teamselection and was named
the Big South Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in2009-10.
The New York native played in 30 tournaments for the Runnin'
Bulldogs during his time at GWU.
Wheeler also served as the president for GWU's
Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2010-11.
Wheeler, who graduated with a B.A. Degree in International
Business in December 2010 and is currently working on his MBAdegree in International
Business.
