Ray Greene

Bio (PDF)  |  @rcgreene10

Ray Greene is in his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Gardner-Webb University baseball program, and will be in charge of the Diamond Dogs' pitching staff again in 2016.

Greene's work with former GWU ace Matt Fraudin allowed the big righty to finish his career at or near the top of every major pitching category in school history. A two-time All-Big South selection (2013-2014), Fraudin was a force in the Gardner-Webb rotation for much his four seasons in Boiling Springs. Gardner-Webb also posted a team ERA under 4.00 for the third season in a row.

Both Fraudin and rotation mate Andrew Barnett were dominant during the 2014 season, as Gardner-Webb posted a 3.41 team ERA – ... Fraudin and Barnett combined for 202 strikeouts on the season and anchored the rotation for the second season in a row. Barnett went on to sign a free agent deal with the Texas Rangers organization.

Greene's second staff proved to be the best in the program's history in terms of ERA in 2013, setting a new school record with a season mark of 3.35 in 513.1 innings pitched. Eight different pitchers, and all three weekend starters, finished with an ERA of less than 4.00 and standout righthanders Matt Fraudin and Andrew Barnett each neared the 100-strikeout plateau – with Fraudin's 96 K leading the Big South.

Fraudin became the first pitcher in Gardner-Webb history to earn first-team All-Big South honors, with the Runnin' Bulldogs a member of the league since 2009.

Greene tutored a strong pitching staff during his first season, as seven different GWU arms finished the season with an ERA below 4.00 and two freshmen – Beau Hilton and Mitch Warner – turned in 7-win seasons. Warner went on to earn Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors, the first Gardner-Webb hurler to do so since Zach Ward in 2003. Relief ace Jeff Howell also established a new school single-season mark for appearances (33), and needs just one more appearance to tie the school's career record.

Greene joined the GWU program after spending five seasons as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Pfeiffer (N.C.) University. The Laurinburg, N.C., native has head coaching experience in the Coastal Plains League (Thomasville Hi Toms), the SCBL (Morganton Aggies).

He started his coaching career at St. Andrew's Presbyterian (N.C.) College, serving as an assistant coach from 2002-2005. Greene also served a stint at Alfred State (N.Y.) University, before returning south to begin his work at Pfeiffer.

As a player, Greene pitched for three seasons at Campbell (N.C.) University, before wrapping up his career at St. Andrew's. He graduated from UNC-Pembroke in 2001.
