ShawnHowe is in his first season as the defensive line coach atGardner-Webb University, and brings a wealth of experience at theNCAA Division I level to the table.
Howe joins the Gardner-Webb staff after spending three seasonsat the University of Memphis. In 2009, he tutored the Tigers’tight ends and spent the previous two seasons working with theMemphis defense.
The Dallas, Ore., native spent the 2006 season as a volunteerassistant at NC State prior to his time at Memphis – workingwith the Wolfpack in the areas of game-plan development, scoutingreport preparation, film breakdown and assisting with the defensiveline.
Howe played collegiately at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College,starting at defensive end for two seasons. He also played defensiveend and linebacker at College of the Redwoods on the junior collegelevel in California, earning first-team All-Mid Empire Conferencehonors and team Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2000.
He graduated from Rocky Mountain in 2004 with a degree inphysical education and health. Howe remained at his alma materearly in his coaching career, gaining valuable experience on thedefensive side of the football and as a regional recruiter until2006.
Howe inherits a Gardner-Webb defensive line that returns two keystarters – nose guard Nelson Rushing and bandit/end JordanWoods – from the 2009 season, along with 2009 Big SouthFreshman of the Year Matt Goods.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs are in their first week of springpractice, with the annual GWU Spring Game scheduled for April 17 inErnest W. Spangler Stadium.
