Chynna Turner

Chynna Turner is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University in 2021-22. Prior to the 2021-22 season, Turner added the role of Recruiting Coordinator to her duties.

“I’m very thankful that I am able to go through this journey with Chynna as our Recruiting Coordinator,” said Gardner-Webb head coach Alex Simmons. “She has always exuded confidence and loyalty. She is a great role model for our student-athletes and our community. Her progressive attitude, humility, and positive mindset will continue to bolster our women’s basketball program.”

Turner is also responsible for all of the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ game scheduling, as well as the development of the post players. In her first season in Boiling Springs, Turner played an integral role in developing redshirt sophomore post Gabrielle Caponegro who averaged 6.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Caponegro earned Player of the Week honors in November after a 16-point, 15-rebound performance in a non-conference win over Davidson.

Turner came to Gardner-Webb after spending the previous three seasons on the staff at the University of Texas at Tyler. There, she helped lead the Patriots to an impressive 67-18 record during that span, including a 30-2 record and a trip to the NCAA Division III Elite 8 in 2015-16.

Prior to her time at UT-Tyler, Turner was a graduate assistant at Ole Miss for two seasons, where she worked with GWU head coach Alex Simmons. At Ole Miss, she assisted in numerous areas, which included post player development, scouting reports, stat keeping, and the oversight of student-managers.

Turner was also a standout forward at Wichita State, leading the Shockers to their first-ever Missouri Valley Conference regular season and championship tournament titles, an appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and the program’s first win in the WNIT Tournament.

Captaining the team her senior year, Turner ranks throughout the top-25 in the Wichita State record books, including second in games played (130), 21st in rebounds (555), 22nd in points scored (974), and 23rd in field-goal percentage (.449).

Turner graduated from Wichita State in 2013 with a degree in sports management. She completed her master’s degree in 2015 at Ole Miss in sociology, and earned her MBA from Gardner-Webb in 2020.
