SPARTANBURG, S.C. Down 2-1
entering game four, the Gardner-Webb volleyball team kept its A-Sun
postseason hopes alive, rallying to tie the match before pulling
out a 15-12 victory in game five.
The Bulldogs
improve to 13-13 on the season and 4-4 in A-Sun play. USCU falls to
8-14 on the year and 1-7 in conference competition.
Senior Audra
Harrison and junior Heidi Steinebrunner each notched career highs
to lead the way for head coach Chris Phillips' team. Harrison hit
.474 for the match, compiling 29 kills on a career-high 57
attempts. The Hickory, N.C., native had just two errors for the
match. Steinebrunner also powered GWU's come-from behind win,
notching 28 kills on 57 attempts.
The only other
GWU player to reach double figures for the game was junior Bethany
Martin with 10.
The reason the
offense ran so well was because of sophomore sensation Regina
Feagin. Feagin dished out a school-record setting 73 assists. She
tallied a double-double by recording 18 digs.
Harrison
amassed a match-high 22 digs for her double-double while junior
Katie Matykowski had 16 digs. Steinebrunner also had a
double-double by tallying 17 digs.
The Bulldogs
established a school record by posting 83 assists. In addition to
Feagin's 73, senior Ashley Pridgeon had six, Matykowski three and
rookie Carrie Long had the other.
All of the
games were tightly contested, but GWU had opportunities to record a
3-0 sweep.
However, after winning
game one by a 30-24 margin, GWU fell by identical 30-25 scores in
games two and three.
In game four,
the Bulldogs fell behind early, but countered to take an 8-4 lead
after kills from Steinebrunner, Harrison and two from Long. GWU
widened its lead to five on a kill by senior Jackie Mathison at
13-8. An ace by Matykowski gave GWU an 18-13 advantage, but the
Spartans battled back to knot the score at 26-26 by using a 4-0
run.
With the score
tied at 29-29, head coach Chris Phillips' team turned to newcomer
Steinebrunner. She slammed home back-to-back kills to force the
deciding game five.
GWU fell behind
in game five and it didn't look too good for the visitors. Down
6-2, a kill by Mathison, followed by a block by Long and Mathison
pulled GWU within two at 6-4.
After USCU
scored two of the next three points, GWU fought back to take a 9-8
lead on Harrison's career-high 29th kill. The Spartans
tied it up at 9-9, but GWU would tally two of the next three points
for an 11-10 lead. From there, the Bulldogs' Steinebrunner notched
two more kills, essentially ended the upset attempt.
GWU will attempt to move
to 14-13 on the season on Tuesday night when it plays host to
UNC-Asheville at 7 p.m., in Paul Porter Arena.
