SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team dropped to 2-2 on the campaign on Thursday night, falling 1-nil at Wofford after a late Terriers goal
It was a mostly defensive battle between Gardner-Webb and Wofford on Thursday night in Spartanburg. The two sides combined for just six shots on goal between them in the opening 45 minutes, a period owned by Gardner-Webb freshman goalkeeper Abril Montiel, who kept GWU in the game with a handful of top drawer saves
Andrei Kaithlyn Chavez had the best chance of the game in the 40th minute, nearly finding the back of the net and leaving a big rebound that the rest of the Runnin' Bulldogs attackers on the break couldn't quite get to.
Deep into the second half, Wofford took the lead in the 79th minute. Terriers attacker Annie Andrews made a cut to the left and fired off the far post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs got a handful of players forward in the final minutes, but were unable to find an equalizer in a 1-nil defeat.
Four Runnin' Bulldogs players played the full 90, including Montiel, freshman midfielder Peyton O'Linn, sophomore defender Ellie Breitenstein and sophomore defender Sarah Birchall. Montiel finished the game with a season-high eight saves.
