Runnin’ Bulldogs Battle Davidson to Scoreless Draw

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb men's soccer battled Davidson to a 0-0 draw Friday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium as the Runnin' Bulldogs officially their home schedule with a hard-fought defensive performance.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net through 90 minutes, with Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Oliver Weng making four saves to preserve the clean sheet. Davidson finished with 16 shots, including four on frame, while Gardner-Webb registered six shots.
Gardner-Webb's best opportunities came throughout the second half as the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to challenge the Davidson defense despite playing a man down for the final six minutes of the first half and the entirety of the second after a red card was issued to Boubacar Simakan at the 39:07 mark.
Weng proved steady between the posts, turning away all four Davidson shots on goal. His biggest stretch came late in the match, when Davidson put pressure on the Gardner-Webb defense with multiple chances in the final 11 minutes. Weng stopped back-to-back attempts from Ayman Maadir in the 79th minute before Davidson managed another shot in the closing minutes.
Gardner-Webb's defense limited Davidson's opportunities despite the numerical disadvantage, while the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to create chances of their own. Adrian Biaggi recorded two shots, while Luk Philipp Hohmann, Kyle Hofmann and Bashir Mansur each registered a shot for Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin' Bulldogs also earned three corner kicks during the contest, including a pair in the second half, while Davidson finished with 12 corners. Gardner-Webb committed eight fouls compared to 12 by the Wildcats.
Neither team could break through despite the extended opportunities, sending Gardner-Webb to a scoreless draw in its home opener.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 5 as they travel to Conway, S.C. to take on Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
