ESPN's Andy Katz Names 'Dogs His Team of the Week

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – ESPN college basketball analyst Andy Katz named Gardner-Webb University his team of the week, lauding the Runnin' Bulldogs well publicized win over No. 20 Kentucky.

In his "Weekly Watch" column on ESPN.com, Katz writes, "College basketball got more pop from Gardner-Webb's upset of Kentucky last week than it would have if the Wildcats opened the season with two wins and a trip to New York ... The Runnin' Bulldogs win over Kentucky at Rupp Arena was the story of the first week of the season."

Katz also mentions Grayson Flittner, who scored 22 points in the win over Kentucky, as a new name to know on the college basketball scene – and lauds the Atlantic Sun as his conference of the week.

The complete column can be accessed at ESPN.com - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=3106251

The mention by Katz is the latest in a monumental media flurry experienced by Gardner-Webb as a result of its run through the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic regional in Lexington, Ky.

Head coach Rick Scruggs and his Runnin' Bulldogs were featured in every component of the ESPN family of networks last week, including live shots for appearances on Outside the Lines, ESPN News and First Take.

Gardner-Webb was also the focus of national newspaper features in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and USA Today – the top-three news-based circulation newspapers nationally (combined circulation of 4.1 million). The win also garnered lead story attention on major websites SI.com and ESPN.com, among others.

Scruggs and a handful of players handled 20 radio call-in shows Thursday, including live appearances on air in Melbourne, Australia, New York, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Charlotte, Atlanta, Raleigh and San Diego, Calif. Scruggs' also appeared live on Fox Sports national radio following the game, ESPN radio's late night show and ESPN's Dan Patrick Show early Thursday morning.

The attention will continue into the week ahead, as Gardner-Webb travels to face Connecticut in the semifinals of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in New York City – the world's leading media market.

First, GWU will play its home opener, hosting North Greenville (S.C.) at 8 pm ET on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Paul Porter Arena. Fans can call for tickets at (704) 406-4355.

Following the North Greenville game, Gardner-Webb will fly to New York on Wednesday morning. The Runnin' Bulldogs will take on Connecticut at 7 pm ET in Madison Square Garden on Thursday. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2, with Dan Shulman and Dick Vitale calling the action.
