November 17, 2007 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's basketball squad hit just 28.8 percent of its shots on Saturday afternoon and fell to UNC-Asheville by a 76-60 score in the consolation game of the Carolina First Classic.
The Bulldogs of GWU drop to 1-3 on the young season while the opposing Bulldogs of UNCA improve to 2-1 on the year.
Rookie Dominique Hudson netted a team-best 13 points while redshirt-sophomore Laura Povilonyte accounted for 10. Sophomore Margaret Roundtree chipped in eight while grabbing a team-high 12 boards.
Freshman Emma Cronk, who earned her first collegiate start, had six points and a team-high seven rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
UNCA was led by Jessica Monroe's 18 points. Monroe was one of five Bulldogs to post double figures in points. Stacy Shepard pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
GWU had its only lead of the contest in the opening minute, grabbing a 2-0 lead off a lay-up by Povilonyte. UNCA recorded a 10-0 spurt over the next three minutes of play and never looked back.
Head coach Rick Reeves' team pulled within four at 10-6 on a tip-in by Cronk, but it would be as close as the Bulldogs would get the rest of the way.
A three-pointer extended the UNC-A lead to double figures at 19-8 8:30 into the contest. Just four minutes later, the home team had extended its lead to 20 at 29-9 on a fast break lay-up by Monroe. The UNCA lead hovered around 20 points the rest of the first half, but a pair of foul shots by Dominique Hudson pulled the Bulldogs within 19 at the break, down 42-23.
Only twice did the Bulldogs cut the deficit margin to 15 points in the second half. The first came on a bucket by Cronk with 13:29 to play and the other time was with 11:16 remaining when Meranda Burnett hit the second of two foul shots, making the score 53-38.
Burnett dished out a team-high five assists in the loss.
For the game, GWU hit just 19-of-66 shots from the floor, including just 4-of-16 from behind the three-point arc. All six of Jessica Bryant's points came from behind the arc, as she hit two-of-four attempts.
Dominique Hudson's nine free-throw makes are the third most in school history.
For her effort, Povilonyte was named to the all-tournament team.
The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday
night as they host Appalachian State at 7 p.m., in Paul Porter
Arena.
