BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Gardner-Webb is ranked No. 25 in
this week's Mid-Major Top 25, released Monday by
CollegeInsider.com.
In its ninth season, the mid-major poll is comprised of teams from
the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West,
Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American,
Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio
Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt and
West Coast conferences.
Gardner-Webb (4-2) was ranked No. 24 in last week's poll, marking
the program's first appearance in the mid-major top-25 since
January, 2002 when the Dogs got off to a 10-4 start
that included wins over Colorado State, Furman and Ivy League
tri-champion Yale.
GWU, which leads the A-Sun in scoring at 77.7 points per game and
in field goal percentage defense has used a balanced effort
so far in 2007-2008. Grayson Flittner (19.3 ppg), Thomas Sanders
(16.7 ppg, 10.8 rpg) and Aaron Linn (12.8 ppg) have paced the squad
to date. Both Linn (11/12) and Flittner (11/19) have earned A-Sun
Player of the Week honors so far this season.
Gardner-Webb, which just finished a stretch of four games in just
five days, faces another daunting week. The Runnin' Bulldogs will
battle UConn on Tuesday night in Hartford, Conn., and will trek to
face No. 22 Clemson on Saturday. GWU and UConn also played last
Thursday (Nov. 15), with the Huskies taking a 78-66 win in Madison
Square Garden.
