November 20, 2007 | Women's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Sophomore Margaret Roundtree netted a career-high 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, helping the Gardner-Webb women's record a comeback win over Appalachian State in front of a frenzied crowd in Paul Porter Arena by a 67-65 score.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-3 on the young season while the Mountaineers drop to 1-2 on the year.
Roundtree led the way for the Bulldogs with a team-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. She also chipped in three steals and a block for good measure. Rookie Monique Hudson tallied 16 points and five rebounds in the game.
Roundtree tallied a career-high 18 points and hit the go-ahead lay-up with 1:33 to play, giving GWU a 64-63 lead. The Bulldogs had a chance to put the game away with 68 seconds to play, but GWU missed three consecutive foul shots before Monique Hudson dropped in a charity toss to extend the lead to two.
After two more missed foul shots by Hudson during the ensuing play, she tossed in another free throw to put the margin at three.
After a lay-up by Frances Hernandez cut the lead to one, 66-65, with eight seconds to play, Gigi Thomas fouled Roundtree, who netted the first of two foul shots for a two-point advantage.
Roundtree's second shot rimmed out and Jessica Bryant grabbed it. Bryant missed both free throws and the ball was rebounded by Whitney Randolph. Randolph got the ball to Sam Ramirez, who dribbled the ball twice, just past midcourt. She pulled up for a 27-foot jumper that was dead on. However, it hit the back of the rim and bounced to Roundtree for her 10th rebound of the game as the buzzer sounded, ending the game as GWU as the victors.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game as Roundtree came out on fire. She tallied the first four points of the game with easy buckets while Laura Povilonyte hit another lay-up as did Monique Hudson for the quick lead.
The visitors got back in the game and tied the contest right before the half on a foul shot. The Mountaineers were able to get back in the contest in large part due to 16 first-half turnovers by the Bulldogs.
GWU was on fire in the first half, canning 47.8 percent of its shots. The Bulldogs drained 11-of-23 attempts and hit 12-of-13 foul shots in the opening half. However, GWU struggled behind the three-point arc as Bryant drilled the only one of the half as head coach Rick Reeves' team was 1-of-5 from downtown in the first half.
GWU improved on its shots from the floor in the second half, draining 61.1 percent of its shots on 11-of-18 shooting.
The Bulldogs connected on 53.7 percent of their shots for the
game (22-of-41), but struggled from the charity stripe. GWU made
19-of-31 attempts from the line, but only hit 7-of-18 in the final
20 minutes.
GWU will look to win back-to-back games for the first time this
season when it hits the floor on Saturday at 2 p.m., against
IUPUI.
