
Lady Jags Knock Off Gardner-Webb, 66-54

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Twenty-five turnovers by Gardner-Webb doomed the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as it fell to IUPUI by a 66-54 score.
The Bulldogs drop to 2-4 on the season while IUPUI evens its mark at 3-3.
Freshman LaTroya Pope led the way for GWU, netted a team-best 12 points for the game in 18 minutes of action. She connected on four-of-seven from the field and hit all four charity tosses in the game. Freshman Monique Hudson and sophomore Margaret Roundtree each tallied 11 points in the loss.
Second-year player Meranda Burnett added seven points and dished out a team-high three assists.
Jernisha Cann posted a game-high 22 points for the victors as Christina Cunningham and Amy Cook accounted for 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs canned 10-of-23 shots from the floor in the final half and trimmed a five-point halftime deficit to one on a Burnett free throw with 7:22 to play, but the squad could not pull even or jump ahead as Cann netted a lay-up for a three-point lead.
Cann's shot was the start of an 11-2 run that put the game out of reach, covering 4:12. During that time, GWU missed two outside jumpers, had two turnovers, missed a lay-up and missed a foul shot.
Despite shooting 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes (9-of-18), 17 turnovers plagued the Bulldogs in the first half as IUPUI jumped out to a 27-22 advantage at the break. GWU had just two assists on the nine first-half buckets.
The Bulldogs got a quick 2-0 lead on a lay-up by Monique Hudson to start the game, but quickly fell behind 14-6 as Cann made a short jumper with 12:40 remaining in the half. However, GWU battled back by knocking down its foul shots. Pope and Dominique each knocked down two foul shots apiece during a mini-spurt by the home team.
Pope's jumper tied the contest at 20 with just over six minutes to play in the half. The Lady Jags were able to record their first lead at the intermission on the season by scoring seven of the final nine points of the half.
For the game, GWU drilled 46.3 percent of its shots, but allowed IUPUI to make 24-of-45 attempts for 53.3 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the opponents 23-20, but committed seven more turnovers than they forced.
Each team drilled its foul shots, with GWU connecting on a season-best 92.9 percent (13-of-14) while the Lady Jags hit 16-of-20 (80 percent).
The Bulldogs return to action when they travel to South Carolina
State for a 5:30 p.m., contest on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
