BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Gardner-Webb head coach Rick Reeves announced the hiring of former Southern Mississippi standout Deondra Carter as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program.
"We are so pleased to have Deondra join our program as she was a very good player who really understood the game. Deondra is a wonderful young lady who will be such a positive role model for our players and for all the young people she comes in contact with. Gardner-Webb University will be an even better program by having Deondra Carter on staff."
Carter will join the staff as one of three assistant coaches after spending the previous year as an early intervention tutor at W.I. Thames Elementary School in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Carter played for the Golden Eagles' basketball team beginning during the 2003-04 season. While there, she garnered the Conference USA first-team all-freshman award. Carter captained the Southern Miss squad for the 2004-05 campaign.
During her freshman season, Carter played for Reeves and led the Golden Eagles with a 12.9 points per game average, helping the squad to a 14-13 overall record. For the 2004-05 season, Carter netted 10.1 points per contest while grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game.
Carter graduated in 2006 with degrees in coaching and sports administration.
She will join the staff in July and will be involved with the
recruiting process as well as on-the-court coaching.
