
Bulldogs Shut Out Aggies, 3-0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Ashley Pridgeon and Bethany Martin each amassed 13 kills while Heidi Steinebrunner notched 10 en route to a 3-0 sweep (30-21, 30-14, 30-21) of North Carolina A&T Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
The Bulldogs even their mark at 5-5 on the year while the Aggies fall to 0-9.
The Bulldogs combined to hit .353 as a team, which is the sixth-best mark in school history. However, GWU did tie a school record with 55 kills in the three-game match. The record was set against Western Carolina on Sept. 12, 2006.
Regina Feagin dished out 45 assists while the defense was solid as well. Matykowski posted a match-high 18 digs while Harrison and Heidi Steinebrunner had 17 and 11, respectively.
The teams began the opening game with GWU taking an early 10-8 lead. The visitors tied the match at 14-14 on a kill by Avignon Williams, but Jessica Clayton's slam put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Harrison followed Clatyon with a kill of her own before Feagin sliced the defense with two straight service aces. An errors by North Carolina A&T made the score 20-14. The Bulldogs continued to pressure the opposition into errors, allowing the home team to easily amass points and secure the game-one win.
GWU ran away with game two, and much of it was because of a quick-fire offensive front. Harrison, Clayton, Pridgeon and Feagin all had kills in the early going as the Bulldogs amassed a 20-9 lead.
With a 26-14 lead, GWU dropped back to play defense on a serve by Brenden Chatman. However, it never crossed the net and the Bulldogs made the Aggies pay. Martin had two consecutive kills before Matykowski served up two aced to end the game with GWU victorious 30-14.
Game three was much closer than anticipated in the outset. After North Carolina A&T knotted the score at 12-12 on a kill by Aundia Gray, the GWU offense began clicking. Feagin found Pridgeon, who recorded a kill before an attack error gave the Bulldogs a 14-12 advantage.
Harrison then notched one of her two service aces and was followed by kills from Martin and Pridgeon, forcing A&T to call a timeout.
GWU's attack continued, forcing the visitors to again call a timeout down 25-19. From there, errors by the Aggies and kills from Martin and Carrie Long ended the match in a 30-21 win.
In game one of the morning session, Davidson downed Air Force 3-0 (30-15, 30-27, 30-19).
Sarabeth Peele, Katie Pierucci and Kittery Neale each had nine kills to lead a balanced Wildcat attack.
Hayley Lawson had 23 assists in the win while Lindsey Woeste recorded 14 digs.
For the Falcons, Caroline Kurtz had a team-high eight kills while Kim Kallabis dished out 13 assists. Rebecca Gerton led the defense with 14 digs.
Air Force takes on North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m., followed by
Davidson against Gardner-Webb at 5 p.m., in Paul Porter Arena.
