Runnin' Bulldogs Stay Undefeated At Home With Sweep Over Alabama State

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb University volleyball team carried their momentum from Fridays win against UNC Wilmington over into Saturdays game against Alabama State. The Runnin' Bulldogs earmed a 3-0 (26-24, 25-15,25-18) match sweep over Alabama State. With the win Gardner-Webb improves to 4-2 on the season, while Alabama State remains winless and falls to 0-7.

Gardner-Webb controlled the match offensively, finishing with a .305 hitting percentage while recording 42 kills. The Runnin' Bulldogs also held Alabama State to a .232 attack percentage and limited the Hornets to just 36 kills.

Peyton Slone continued to impress and led the offense once again recording a match high 14 kills while hitting an impressive .684. Slone also added two blocks to the victory. Sarina Galyean contributed 11 kills on 22 attacks hitting .409 and also contributed two blocks. Nicole Osborne contributed seven kills, three assists, one ace and five digs, while Alexis Maesch added four kills and a block.

At the net the Runnin' Bulldogs recorded six total blocks, with Madison DeMink leading the way with four. Gardner-Webb also received a strong performance from their setters as Olivia Leferbve dished out a team-high 15 assists, while Aleina Manaois added 14 assists.

The first set was tightly contested with Gardner-Webb pulling away late. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the first set by a score of 26-24. In the second set Gardner-Webb gained momentum early and controlled the frame winning the second set 25-15. And in the third set Gardner-Webb found a rhythm late to win by a score of 25-18 giving them the sweep.

Defensively, the Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 31 digs with Kiera Vazquez leading the way with 6. Osborne and Anabelle Sims each had 5, while Leferbve and Ella Moss contributed four apiece.

Gardner-Webb will look to carry their momentum into their next match on Tuesday, September 8th where they will travle to Cullowhee to take on the Catamounts of Western Carolina at 6 p.m.
