Bulldogs Fall To Winthrop, 2-1
October 14, 2008 | Women's Soccer
ROCK HILL, S.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was unable to hold on to a first-half lead, eventually succumbing to the Eagles of Winthrop by a 2-1 score Tuesday evening in front of 173 fans.
The Bulldogs fall to 3-11 on the year and 1-4 in Big South play.
The Eagles improve to 6-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference
competition.
Rookie Stephanie Benshoof netted her first collegiate score at the
7:52 mark of the contest, giving head coach Kevin Mounce's team an
early 1-0 lead. Benshoof connected on a free kick from 20 yards out
for the 1-0 advantage.
GWU hunkered down the rest of the half as Sarah Wyszynski stopped
both Eagles' shots on goal. In the opening stanza, Winthrop
out-shot the Bulldogs 7-6. However, GWU held the advantage where it
counted on the scoreboard.
In the 64th minute of play, Kirsten Lee served the ball
toward the goal, finding Chelsea Tidwell, who slid in and kicked it
past a charing Wyszynski, knotting the contest at 1-1.
The score remained the same until Christine Isabella posted her
first collegiate goal in the 79th minute. After Isabella
took a shot, Wyszynski was able to get a piece of the ball, but the
deflection went directly back to Isabella. Isabella then faked
another quick shot before taking a step and drilling home what
turned out to be the match-winning goal.
The Bulldogs struggled for opportunities in the second half,
gaining just one shot on goal compared to six by Winthrop.
In the match, the Eagles out-shot GWU by a 15-7 count. Wyszynski
did have six saves compared to just two by Dimitra Poulos.
GWU had five corner kicks to four by the home squad.
The Bulldogs will look to end their losing streak next Thursday
when they host Liberty in a critical Big South Conference match.
The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
