October 29, 2008 | Women's Soccer
HIGH POINT, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team posted its second consecutive shutout and ended up with its second consecutive tie. GWU and High Point played to a 0-0 draw Wednesday evening in a crucial Big South Conference match in front of 181 fans.
The Bulldogs move to 4-11-2 on the season and 2-4-2 in the Big
South. High Point stands at 7-4-7 overall and 3-2-3 in conference
competition.
GWU's Angie Harvey nearly got head coach Kevin Mounce's
team on the scoreboard in the fourth minute when she rocketed a
shot that was destined to the back of the net. However, it dinged
off the post, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
Two corner kicks over the next 14 minutes was all the Bulldogs could muster as neither team could get things going. The home squad registered three shots, two of which were blocked, and three corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net as none of the attempts were on frame.
Neither team was able to get into the others offensive third until Jillie Johnston's shot at the 32:01 mark, but it was blocked by a GWU defender. The Panthers had one more shot, coming in the 40th minute, but it was high of the goal. The Bulldogs' final attempt of the opening stanza came off the foot of Brooke Bull, who sent it wide of the frame at the 44:11 mark. The teams went into the locker room tied at 0-0.
Laura Shupe booted the ball in the 51st minute that hit the crossbar. In the 54th minute, GWU keeper Jessica Tuggle saved back-to-back shots the first two on goal in the contest. The teams then continued to fight for possession around the midfield stripe, but neither could gain possession long enough to make an offensive move.
Rookie Lauren Kelly came into the contest in the 69th
minute and immediately went to work. Kelly got open in the box and
headed the ball toward the goal, but it went just wide.
From that point forward, the Panthers controlled the rest of
regulation, but the Bulldogs stood their ground. HPU had four shots
over the final 20 minutes, but the GWU defense stiffened and did
not allow for any of the attempts to be on goal as all were wide or
high of the goal.
In the first overtime session, Sara Rager sent two shots toward the goal in the 91st minute, but bother were blocked. The next two attempts in overtime came from the Red and Black. Megan Reimer's shot at the 97:28 mark was blocked and Megan Tremblay nearly ended the contest 14 seconds later, but her shot was saved by Marisa Abbott.
Dawn Rollyson's shot at the 99:09 mark was wide, but 23 seconds
later she had a chance to end the contest. However, Abbott was up
to the challenge and kept the game scoreless, which also forced a
second overtime.
Shupe took the first shot of the second overtime session, which did not occur until the 108:18 mark. A minute later, she put one on frame, but Tuggle was there to gobble it up and helping GWU record its second straight scoreless draw.
For the match, HPU tallied 23 shots to 12 by the Bulldogs. The
Panthers placed just three shots on frame to four by Mounce's team.
Tuggle had three saves on the evening.
The Bulldogs return to action next Sunday in their season finale at
VMI. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
