BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to UNC Asheville in the Battle of the Bulldogs at Greene-Harbison Stadium Saturday afternoon in a Big South Conference contest.
GWU falls to 3-10 on the year and 1-3 in the Big South Conference. UNCA improves to 5-7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference competition.
After an extremely tight first half that saw only four shots on goal between the two squads, the final 45 minutes of play turned into a fast-paced contest that saw a flurry of shots from both teams.
With the contest scoreless to start the second frame, the Bulldogs looked like they were going to take an early lead when Dara Goldstein headed the ball toward the goal. However, a defender was able to play the ball away from the end-line, leaving the score tied in the 49th minute.
In the 56th minute, Megan Reimer's shot was just left of the frame. A minute later, Jillian Dean fired a shot that was just a couple feet wide right making the contest 1-0 in favor of head coach Kevin Mounce's team.
UNCA'S Meagan Bradham recorded back-to-back shots in the 58th and 59th minutes that missed to the right and just high of the goal. In the 60th minute, Bethany Teague played the ball from near the midfield stripe toward the top of the goal. The ball found Bradham's foot. She collected the ball, turned and rocketed the ball past Sarah Wyszynski for a 1-0 lead.
GWU tried to battle back. Less than fifty seconds later, rookie Lauren Kelly blasted a ball toward the goal, but hit it just a tad too hard as it went sailing about three feet over the goal.
At the 64:56 mark, McKenna Stockhausen made the score 2-0 as she rifled the ball into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out. Juliana Duncan was credited with the assist.
UNCA keeper Veronica Lazar was up to the challenge as she repeatedly thwarted GWU's attempts to get on the scoreboard. She made an outstanding save on Megan Reimer's shot 77:09 into the contest.
After collecting the ball, she got the ball to midfield. From there, Lauren Turnburke beat a couple of GWU defenders along the right flank and crossed the ball to the bottom left of the goal from 25 yards out for a 3-0 advantage.
The Red and Black had two more shots in the closing minutes, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
For the match, GWU out-shot UNCA 12-11. The Bulldogs put six shots on frame as did the visitors. GWU had five corner kicks compared to UNCA.
Sarah Wyszynski amassed three saves in the contest while Lazar had four. UNCA was also credited with two team saves.
