SPARTANBURG, S.C. The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs played an all-around outstanding match Friday evening, but one breakdown allowed the Elon Phoenix to come away with a 1-0 victory at USC Upstate's facility.
The Bulldogs now stand at 1-5 on the season while Elon improves to 2-2-1.
In the 39th minute, Molly Calpin found the back of the net for the only score of the match.
In the 17th minute, Calpin fired a shot at Sarah Wyszynski, who got her first start between the pipes on the season, but Wyszynski stuffed the attempt. GWU tried to get on the scoreboard at the 20:52 mark, but Lauren Kelly was turned away by the Phoenix's Sydney Little.
Kasey Gladhill fired a shot in the 36th minute of play, but Little was up to the challenge, keeping the contest at 0-0. Then, at the 39:37 point, Calpin was able to get a slow roller past Wysyznski for a 1-0 lead just before intermission. Susannah Gianakos was credited with the assist on the play.
GWU was unable to muster a shot on frame in the second stanza despite incredible play by the entire team.
Wysyznski stifled the Phoenix in the final frame, turning away all three shots on goal, which enabled the Bulldogs to have a fighting chance.
For the match, GWU totaled four shots, two of which were on frame. Elon amassed six shots, five of which were on goal. The Bulldogs, although it didn't show in the shots on goal category, controlled the play as the team compiled eight corner kicks to just four for the Phoenix. GWU was whistled for four offsides penalties while Elon was not drawn offsides at all.
"We dominated the play," head coach Kevin Mounce said. "We had one breakdown in the back and Elon capitalized on it. I'm pleased with our attitude. We did a lot of good things.
"I believe our forwards are pressing a bit. Today it was good to get Angie Harvey back; it definitely gave us a lift. You have to give Elon a lot of credit. They finished the one main chance they had.
"Karissa Jensen played right back today and did an outstanding job for us. Chelsea Hearne and Melissa Malone each played well.
"We are better than our record indicates, but that's the only thing people look at and are judged on."
The Bulldogs will look to improve upon their record on Sunday
when they take on the host Spartans of USC Upstate at 4:30 p.m. A
year ago, GWU downed USCU 2-0 in Boiling Springs.
