September 22, 2008 | Women's Soccer
BUIES CREEK, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was unable to pull out its second consecutive road win as the squad fell by a 2-1 count to Campbell Monday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Bulldogs fall to 3-7 on the season while the Camels improve to
1-3-2 on the year.
GWU attempted to get on the board from the get-go as rookie Chelsea
Mosko fired a shot that Campbell's keeper Bonnie Luck was able to
save just a mere 32 seconds into the contest.
After two corner kicks by the home team over the next 15 minutes,
the Bulldogs' Brooke Bull rocketed a shot that looked destined for
the goal but missed just wide at the 16:32 mark.
In the 18th minute, GWU was whistled for a foul in the
box that Kaili Terry was able to put past keeper Sarah Wyszynski on
the ensuing penalty kick, giving the Camels a 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to get things going until the 28th
minute of play. That's when Megan Reimer rocketed a shot that was
wide. Then, in the 31st minute, senior Angie Harvey's
shot nearly went in, but was saved by Luck. GWU had two more shots
in the next three minutes, but one was high while Luck came up with
another save at the 33:03 mark. Campbell carried a 1-0 lead into
the intermission.
A goal by Amanda Murphy in the 48th minute put the
Camels up 2-0. Murphy found the back of the net off a corner kick
from Ashley Wagner.
After the second goal, head coach Kevin Mounce inserted senior Kim
Scercy into the line-up between the pipes.
Reimer tried to pull the Bulldogs within one but sent a shot wide
of the frame at the 59:06 mark. Newcomer Megan Tremblay was able to
score a goal for GWU just four minutes later after she collected
the ball and rifled the ball into the left side of the goal,
putting GWU down just 2-1.
Tremblay nearly evened the match in the 69th minute, but Luck was able to make an outstanding play on the ball to keep the ball from reaching the back of the net.
Karissa Jensen had a shot in the 84th minute but was
unable to connect. GWU's last chance came off the foot of Paige
Reagan, but once again Luck was involved, stopping the shot to
preserve the 2-1 win. The Red and Black had two corner kicks after
Reagan's shot, including one with 52 seconds remaining. However,
neither resulted in Mounce's team getting a shot.
For the match, the Bulldogs fired off 11 shots to four by Campbell. GWU managed six shots on goal to just two by the Camels.
Scercy, who played the final 42:14 in goal without giving up a
score.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they continue on the
road and take on Coastal Carolina in a 6 p.m., Big South Conference
competition.
