
GWU Women's Golf Takes Fifth Overall, as Allum Picks Up Top-10 Finish at 2010 Big South Women's Golf Championship

Ninety-Six, S.C. - Gardner-Webb women's golf team carded a team score of 938, +74, over the last three days to finish fifth-place overall in the team standings of the 2010 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Lighting and hosted by Radford University at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
The Lady Bulldogs carded team rounds of 310, 314 and 314 to finish
in fifth-place with a tournament team score of 938, +74, nine
strokes behind Radford who took fourth-place with a combined score
of 929, +65.
Freshman Meghan Allum bounced back form a first round 80, to card a
second round 73 and a third round 76, +4, on Wednesday, to pace the
Lady Bulldogs with a combined three-round score of 229, +13,
placing her in a tie for ninth-place overall.
GWU's Brianna Clemmons finished the three-round event in a tied at
19th-place overall with a combined score of 234, +18, while fellow
freshman Lauren Smith finished with a tournament score of 238, +22,
good enough for her to finish in a tie for 24th-place overall.
Gardner-Webb's Chelcia Petersen carded a tournament score of 242,
+26, to finish tied for 28th-place overall, while fellow newcomer
Hannah Hellyer finished one stroke back of Petersen, shooting a
243, +27, for the three-day championship event, placing in a tie
for 30th-place overall.
Statistically, Allum was one of only three lady golfers to card an
eagle for the tournament and led the Lady Bulldogs with a team-high
total of 33 pars. Allum tied with Smith for the team lead with a
4.83, 2 under, par-5 scoring average for the championship event,
while Clemmons led GWU with eight birdies and an even 3.00 par-3
scoring average.
As a team, Gardner-Webb was third overall with a total of 25
birdies and was second overall in par-5 scoring with an average of
5.05, +3, for the event.
Charleston Southern, who led from start to finish of the three-day
championship event, carded a tournament team low score of 291, +3,
to run away with the 2010 Big South Women's Golf Championship with
a championship record low combined score of 881, +17.
Finishing second was Coastal Carolina, who carded a team score of
904, +40, while Winthrop took third-place overall with a score of
925, +61.
CSU's Olivia Jordan-Higgins was crowned the 2010 Big South Women's
Golf Championship individual winner, as she carded rounds of 70, 75
and 70 to finish the tournament with a score of 215, 1 under,
becoming the first player in Big South history to finish under par
in the Women's Golf Championships.
Gardner-Webb, which fielded five freshmen in the championship event
this week, will look to carry its success from this tournament into
next season, as head coach Tee Burton should have all nine Lady
Bulldogs returning next year.
