SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Gardner-Webb
scored a combined eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings
Wednesday, and Adam Izokovic came on to save the game in the ninth
to spark a 10-8 win over Wofford.
Gardner-Webb
(17-19) struck first in what would prove to be a back-and-forth
affair, getting a leadoff double in the first from Daniel Merck and
a two-out RBI single from Kurt Fulginiti to get on the board.
Wofford (11-25)
wasted little time to rally, as Mac Doyle belted his
15th home run of the season with one out in the bottom
of the first, a three-run shot that put the Terriers in front.
The two teams
traded solo home runs in the third, with Jake Watts belting his
first career shot over the wall in right to trim Wofford's lead to
3-2. Alex Lee responded with a solo shot himself to left in the
bottom half of the inning to give the hosts a 4-2 edge.
Gardner-Webb
rallied to take the lead in the top of the sixth, plating four runs
on four hits. The 'Dogs also took advantage of a pair of walks and
a hit batter in the frame, as Wofford went to the bullpen four
times before getting out of a bases loaded jam with GWU in front
6-4. O.J. McFarland and Zeke Blanton had RBI singles in the sixth
and Jake Watts took a pitch off the shoulder blade to drive in a
run.
Wofford went back
in front in the bottom half of the same inning, getting an RBI
single from Doyle to trim the lead to 6-5. The Terriers then loaded
the bases with no outs, and Neil Robinette coaxed a free pass to
tie the game. Reliever Brandon Boling rolled a pair of ground balls
to stall the rally, and ended the inning with a shallow fly ball to
keep the score tied, 6-6.
Ty Boyles led off
the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to put
Gardner-Webb back in front, belting a pitch on a line over the wall
in left. Adam McFarland followed with a double and would score on a
wild pitch with two outs to put GWU up 8-6. Daniel Merck, who was
stealing second on the same play, advanced to third.
Aaron Miller was
intentionally walked after that sequence and stole second soon
after. The Wofford catcher attempted to pick Merck off of third on
Miller's steal, but the ball sailed into left field, allowing both
Merck and Miller to score for a 10-6 Gardner-Webb.
The Terriers
scored two runs quickly in the bottom of the seventh, as Boling
plunked Alex Lee. Kyle Behrendt scorched a ball into right field
for an RBI triple and Doyle followed with a laser to left to plate
Behrendt and make the score 10-8.
Jeff Howell got
the call from the bullpen to retire the side without further
damage, and worked through a scoreless eighth as well - ending both
frames with strikeouts.
Izokovic then
came on for his fourth save of the season, using just 15 pitches to
strike out the side and end the game.
Gardner-Webb had
13 hits in the game, with Adam McFarland going 3-for-5 at the plate
with two runs scored to lead the offense. Merck (2-for-3, 2B, 2
runs, 2 SB) and O.J. McFarland (2-for-5, RBI, run) also had
multiple hits.
Boling (2-1)
earned the win, pitching around two runs allowed in an inning of
work.
Wofford managed
eight hits, with Doyle going 3-for-5 with five RBI on the night to
pace that effort.
Rowland (1-2) was
saddled with the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) in 1.1
innings of work.
Gardner-Webb
travels to Charleston Southern for a three-game series beginning
Friday at 2 pm. Wofford will hit the road to take on UNC Greensboro
in a three-game set this weekend as well.
