Gardner-Webb Softball Week Eight Game Notes (Games 35-38)
April 05, 2010 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a tough weekend, in which GWU was swept by the Radford Highlanders, and will look to stop a current eight-game skid as Gardner-Webb will take on Presbyterian College on Wednesday and host Coastal Carolina this weekend at Varsity Field.
GWU will travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on PC on Wednesday, April
7, as it is the rubber match between these two teams, as the two
split its double header back on March 27. The first-pitch is
slated for 3:30 p.m. of the single game tilt.
This weekend, Gardner-Webb welcomes Coastal Carolina to town for a
three-game conference showdown at Varsity Field. The two teams
will play a double header on Saturday, April 10, beginning at 1
p.m. and then will face off in the third and final game on Sunday,
April 11, at 2 p.m.
Gardner-Webb (11-23, 1-4 Big South) battled the Highlanders, the
preseason Big South Conference favorites, for all three-games of
the conference weekend series. In the first game of the twin bill
on Friday afternoon, the Highlanders used three solo home runs to
pick up a 3-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs. In game two,
Gardner-Webb battled the Highlanders for all seven innings, falling
to Radford 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run
double.
Heartbreak struck the Lady Bulldogs once more on Saturday, as
Gardner-Webb battled back from a 7-1 deficit to push the
Highlanders to the limit again, as Radford scored a run in its
final at bat once more to help them escape with an 8-7 win.
Senior Melody Harrell made history over the weekend series, as the
shortstop from Wilmington, N.C. became the first Lady Bulldog in
Gardner-Webb's Division I history to score 100 runs and drive in
100 RBIs. The shortstop has 100 career RBIs, which ranks tied for
second in GWU's Division I history, and has scored 100 career runs,
which ranks third overall.
The Presbyterian College Blue Hose are 13-12 overall and 1-7 in the
Big South thus far this season. However, PC is 6-4 at home in
Clinton, S.C. this year and are looking to take the overall series
win over the Lady Bulldogs this Wednesday afternoon. PC is 0-5
since defeating GWU 6-5 back on March 27 with all-five losses
coming in conference play. Third-baseman Taylor Staten still leads
the team offensively, as she is hitting .384 with a team-high four
home runs and 15 RBIs. Pitcher Mary Gordon, who got the win over
GWU on March 27, is 6-4 on the year with a team-low 2.36 ERA.
GWU is 4-3 versus PC since both teams have moved to NCAA Division I
in 2006-07. The two teams have split thus far this season.
Gardner-Webb was a perfect 2-0 versus the Lady Blue Hose in 2008;
however, PC took two out of three contests last year. Last year,
the two programs' first as Big South foes, PC defeated GWU 4-0 in
the conference opener. Gardner-Webb bounced back to defeat PC 5-3
two weeks later, however, in game two of the double header PC
blanked the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 in Clinton, S.C.
Gardner-Webb and PC are 1-1 against each other on the softball
diamond thus far this season, as the two teams split a Big South
double header back on March 27 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Gardner-Webb took the opening game of the twin bill 2-1, as senior
hurler Christine Murray picked up the win with a record 16
strikeouts in the complete game shutout win. In the second game,
PC battled back to pick up a 6-5 win over the Lady Bulldogs,
overcoming junior Cindy Boomhower's nine K performance. Melody
Harrell led the offensive charge, as the senior was 3-7 (.429) with
a home run, a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Coastal Carolina Lady Chanticleers are 17-18 overall and 1-1 in
the Big South this year. Like, GWU, Coastal Carolina will play on
Wednesday afternoon, as the Lady Chants will host UNC Wilmington
for a non-conference double header. Offensively, Jazmine Daigle
and Cacia Pierre lead Coastal Carolina. Daigle is hitting .412 on
the year, with a team-high 42 hits, seven doubles, 18 runs and 21
RBIs, while Pierre is hitting .329 with 23 hits, three home runs
and 13 RBIs. Ashley Frederick leads the Lady Chants in the circle
with a 2.45 ERA on the year with 14 complete games and nine wins,
while Katelin Edwards is 8-6 overall on the year with four shutout
wins.
The Lady Bulldogs are 7-7 against the Lady Chanticleers since
moving to the NCAA Division I level in 2000-01. Coastal Carolina
holds a 2-0 advantage over GWU this season, picking up two
non-conference wins over the Lady Bulldogs at the Seminole Classic
back in February. Last season, Gardner-Webb was 3-1 against
Coastal Carolina including picking up a 12-8 win over the Lady
Chanticleers in the 2009 Big South Championship Tournament, ending
the Lady Chants season.
The Lady Bulldogs are 0-2 versus the Lady Chanticleers of Coastal
Carolina already this season, as these two teams met twice in
non-conference action at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Fla.
in mid-February. Christa Fullwood hit a stellar .600 and posted a
.800 slugging percentage over the two-games against Coastal
Carolina, however, the Lady Bulldogs failed to score a single run,
falling to CCU 1-0 in nine innings and then 2-0 two days later.
Every week throughout the 2010 softball season, the Gardner-Webb
athletic media relations' office will produce game notes featuring
