
GWU Women's Golf in Third-Place After Day One at the 2011 Big South Women's Golf Championships

Ninety-Six, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team carded a first round team score of 316, +28, on Monday to finish day one in third-place overall at the 2011 Big South Women's Golf Championships presented by Musco Sports Lighting at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
GWU sophomore Hannah Hellyer paced the Runnin' Bulldog squad, as she finished her first round out strong, turning in a 37 on the back nine, to finish day one with a 76, +4, placing her in a three-way tie for seventh-place overall. Hellyer turned in a team-high four birdies to go along with seven pars in her first round of play on Monday.
Fellow sophomore Lauren Smith carded a first round 78, +6, as her consistent play, which included 12 birdies placed her at +3 after 14 holes. On the final four holes of the opening round, Smith shot three over par, to finish the day with a team-high 13 pars and in 13th-place overall at 78, +6.
GWU senior Courtney Meyer, the lone upperclassman for the Runnin' Bulldogs, carded two birdies and seven pars over the first 18 holes, to finish with an 81, +9, while sophomore Sammy Vass posted two birdies on the front nine to also finish with a first round 81, +9, placing them both in an eight-way tie at 16th-place overall.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU was sophomore Meghan Allum who carded eight pars on day one, yet struggled over the last four holes, shooting a +7 during the final stretch, to finish the first round with an 82, +10, good enough for a tie at 24th-place overall.
Coastal Carolina is in first-place after round one having carded a team score of 301, +13, while Charleston Southern who shot a first round team score of 312, +24, is in second-place, four shots ahead of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Round two of the 2011 Big South Women's Golf Championships will begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, weather permitting.
