November 26, 2013 | Women's Basketball
DURHAM - Gardner-Webb saw its four-game win streak snapped Monday night, as North Carolina Central used an early second half run to pull away for an 89-58 win.
The win by the Eagles (3-2) snapped a five-game losing streak to Gardner-Webb (4-1) as well. GWU trailed 34-28 at halftime after NC Central knocked down 5-of-8 from 3-point range to build an early lead.
The Eagles burst out of the locker room on a tear, going on a 20-3 run to start the second half and create an insurmountable lead. Jessica Freeman scored 10 of those points for Central, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Raquel Davis added eight as the pair teamed up nicely during the spurt.
NC Central grew its lead to 25 points, 63-38 on a Davis jumper with 10:45 left, and Gardner-Webb would get no closer than 23 points the rest of the way.
A decided edge on the glass favored the Eagles, as they owned a 28-14 edge in second-chance points and a 50-39 rebounding advantage.
Gardner-Webb had a tough night shooting the basketball, going just 20-of-63 from the floor (31.3 percent) and just 3-of-18 from long distance (16.7 percent). Catrina Green (12 points) and Tabby Koerner (10 points) led the way offensively for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
NC Central shot 50 percent for the game, and got a game-high 23 points from Freeman - and 17 points, 10 rebounds from Davis inside. Khyra Conerly added 13 points and Morgan Jones netted 12 off the bench for the Eagles.
Gardner-Webb remains on the road next, traveling to Davidson Saturday afternoon, November 30, for another non-conference tilt.
