Women's Hoops: Gardner-Webb Opens 2013-14 Season At Home Friday Night
November 07, 2013 | Women's Basketball
The Runnin' Bulldogs welcome back six different women who started at least 13 games last season, with guard Jasmine Dale (10.4 ppg) and center Catrina Green (10.2 ppt, 9.4 rig) leading that group.
Dale shot a sizzling 46.2 percent from 3-point range as a junior and was the team's best free throw shooter at 76.7 percent. The LaVergne, Tenn., standout also led the team with 27.5 minutes per game, and is healthy after missing seven games last season with an injury.
Green has been a durable post presence during his career in Boiling Springs, and is capable of a double-double on most nights. Her 44.3 percent rate from the field led Gardner-Webb's regulars last season and she pulled down 100 more rebounds than anyone else on the roster in 31 games played.
Junior wing Jessica Heilig is poised for a breakout season after showing immense improvement last year. The Salisbury, N.C., native averaged 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds, and was active defensively with 23 blocks and 23 steals.
Speedster Candace Brown (8.3 ppg, 59 steals) and veteran point guard Mayhana Dunovant (4.7 points, 89 assists, 46 steals) are more than capable of pushing the pace in the backcourt and sharpshooter Lana Doran (4.4 ppg) will be a valuable perimeter threat after starting 13 games.
Veterans Tabby Koerner (seven starts), Doreen Richardson (seven starts) and Olivia Parker (nine starts) also provide experience for Reeves' bunch.
Reeves welcomes three freshmen to the fold in 2013-2014 - wing Kiera Currie (Romeoville,Ill.), point guard Tierra Huntsman (Connersville, Ind.) and post player Christina McQueen (Findlay, Ohio). Currie and Huntsman each earned All-State honors during their prep careers and McQueen played in the annual Ohio/Indiana All-Star Game following her senior season.
Friday night's game will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com), with video free for the first time through the league's outstanding video portal. Games can be viewed on a wide array of devices, including smart phones and tablets.
