GAME NOTES: Gardner-Webb Women Host Montreat In Opener
November 08, 2013 | Women's Basketball
THE
GAME
Gardner-Webb hosts Montreat (NAIA) in its 2013-2014 season opener at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena ... The game will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com), which is free this season for the first time and available to view on a wide range of devices - including smartphones and tablets.
HOME SWEET HOME
Gardner-Webb will play its first four games of the season in Paul Porter Arena, a locale Coach Rick Reeves' team has enjoyed over the past five seasons. GWU posted eight home wins last season, and had double figures win totals in both 2009-10 and 2010-11 on its home court.
SHE CAN SHOOT
Senior guard Jasmine Dale (Lavergne, Tenn.) enters her final season at Gardner-Webb as one of the nation's premier long range shooters. Dale ranked in the top-10 nationally and was second in the Big South in 3-point percentage - knocking down 42.6 percent of her attempts. Dale also shot a career-high 76.7 percent from the charity stripe (23-of-30). For her career, Dale has increased her scoring each season and has made more 3-pointers each season she has played with the Runnin' Bulldogs. She knocked in 55-of-129 attempts last season, and has made 145-of-410 (35.4 percent) for her career.
#DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Senior center Catrina Green (Greensboro, N.C.) earned preseason All-Big South recognition from College Sports Madness - and for good reason. The 6-foot-2 standout averaged nearly a double-double last season, posting 10.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. That should come as no surprise, as Green averaged 11.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore and has gone for 8.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during her career in Boiling Springs. Green has recorded 22 career double-doubles, and looks to continue that trend as the anchor in the middle for her final campaign. She needs just 14 boards to reach 700.
THE BOSS
Gardner-Webb head coach Rick Reeves enters his 10th season with the program headed in the right direction. Reeves, who built Liberty into a national-caliber program before moving on to Conference USA and Southern Miss in the late 1990s, has a reputation for creating a culture of success on and off the court wherever he mans the sidelines. Reeves has posted 402 career wins in 27 seasons as a college head coach, and rebuilt Gardner-Webb's program to the tune of 135 wins so far. His 2009-10 squad won the Big South Conference regular season crown, and fell a basket shy of the NCAA Tournament - advancing instead to the school's first Division I basketball postseason appearance in the WNIT. His team pushed through the following season, winning the Big South Conference Tournament and playing competitively with Miami (Fla.) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
MYRTLE BEACH MADNESS
For the second-straight season, the Big South Conference basketball fortunes for all squads will be decided within a few miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Conway, S.C., and the HTC Center will host the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women's Basketball Championship - beginning on Tuesday, March 4 and concluding on Sunday, March 9 (ESPN3). First round games will be played on the 4th, and quarterfinals (March 6) and semifinals (March 8) will follow. The first round and quarterfinals games will air on the Big South Network, with the semifinals and title bout set for ESPN3. Tickets are available for purchase.
