March 01, 2014 | Women's Lacrosse
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb University's Board of Trustees voted unanimously during its February meeting to add women's lacrosse as the athletics department's 22nd sport. Gardner-Webb will be the ninth women's lacrosse program in the Big South Conference and will begin competition in 2014-2015. Current league members include Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Davidson (associate member), High Point, Liberty, Longwood, Presbyterian and Winthrop. "Our plan is to hire a coach this spring, so that person can begin recruiting and putting their vision for the program in motion," said Vice President for Athletics Chuck Burch. "We are excited to begin this process and look forward to becoming a very competitive program within the Big South Conference." Women's lacrosse is a spring sport and the Big South Conference will provide the opportunity to compete for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. "Providing a wide range of competitive opportunities for our students is very important, and the sport of women's lacrosse is growing rapidly in many of our regional metropolitan areas," said Gardner-Webb president Dr. Frank Bonner. "Women's lacrosse will immediately provide our university with a unique platform to present Gardner-Webb University to potential students who might not be familiar with what we have to offer." The sports is the first added by Gardner-Webb since men's swimming began competition in 2007-2008. The last women's sports added were women's swimming and women's track and field in 1999-2000.
