Runnin' Bulldogs Pull Closer On Second Day At Big South Championships

NINETY SIX, S.C. - Gardner-Webb was red-hot in Tuesday's second round at the Big South Conference Men's Golf Championships, firing a 294 to move within striking distance of the lead group.

The effort marked a 17-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round, and moved the Runnin' Bulldogs to within three strokes of sixth position. Tuesday's round was the second-best for any team, just one stroke off of top-seed and event leader Liberty.

GWU also distanced itself from the bottom of the field, moving 22 strokes ahead of Longwood and 42 strokes ahead of High Point.

Freshman standout Blake Maum shot a sensational 68 on Tuesday to pace the 'Dogs and moved into a tie for sixth individually. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native was one of two Gardner-Webb players to shoot under par on Tuesday - with Matt Yelverton carding a 70 to move into the top-20 himself.

Yelverton is tied for 19th after the second round. He and Maum had the two best rounds of any individual Tuesday.

Clement Kurniawan (78-77-155) improved by one stroke from Monday's action and sits in a tie for 31st. Daley Byles (77-79-156, t-35th) and Vincent Blanchette (78-84-162, t-43rd) rounded out Gardner-Webb's effort.

Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Radford and Presbyterian comprise the top-5 after two days of action. Gardner-Webb is just nine strokes behind that pack and 17 strokes out of second place.

The final round of the tournament will begin on Wednesday morning at the Patriot at Grand Harbour.
