NINETY
SIX, S.C. - Gardner-Webb was red-hot in Tuesday's second round at
the Big South Conference Men's Golf Championships, firing a 294 to
move within striking distance of the lead group.
The
effort marked a 17-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round,
and moved the Runnin' Bulldogs to within three strokes of sixth
position. Tuesday's round was the second-best for any team, just
one stroke off of top-seed and event leader Liberty.
GWU
also distanced itself from the bottom of the field, moving 22
strokes ahead of Longwood and 42 strokes ahead of High
Point.
Freshman
standout Blake
Maum shot a sensational 68 on Tuesday to pace the 'Dogs and
moved into a tie for sixth individually. The Chattanooga, Tenn.,
native was one of two Gardner-Webb players to shoot under par on
Tuesday - with Matt
Yelverton carding a 70 to move into the top-20
himself.
Yelverton
is tied for 19th after the second round. He and Maum had the two
best rounds of any individual Tuesday.
Clement
Kurniawan (78-77-155) improved by one stroke from Monday's
action and sits in a tie for 31st. Daley
Byles (77-79-156, t-35th) and Vincent
Blanchette (78-84-162, t-43rd) rounded out Gardner-Webb's
effort.
Liberty,
Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, Radford and Presbyterian
comprise the top-5 after two days of action. Gardner-Webb is just
nine strokes behind that pack and 17 strokes out of second
place.
The
final round of the tournament will begin on Wednesday morning at
the Patriot at Grand Harbour.
