Six Runnin' Bulldogs Tabbed with NFCA Academic All-America Honors

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The NFCA recently released their All-America Scholar-Athlete selections for the 2016-2017 academic year, which included 7,300 student-athletes from all divisions.
Head coach Tom Cole stated, "I am very happy for all of these six ladies. Achieving a 3.5 or better at Gardner-Webb is not easy. I'm also happy for the rest of the team as we posted a collective 3.34 team GPA."
NCAA Division I led the way with the most selections as 1,843 student-athletes earned Academic All-America honors. Gardner-Webb placed six players on the list including: Alia Booth, Samantha Harrell, Mackenzie Thompson, Callie Thornton, Ashley Wark, and Annamarie Warley.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return five of the six selections from last year's team.
In her freshman campaign, Alia Booth started 49 games while posting a team leading batting average of .311. In the classroom, her performance was equally as impressive as she posted a cumulative 3.85 GPA.
Annamarie Warley recorded a 3.59 GPA as a sophomore, last year. The transfer from Florence-Darlington Technical College started all 50 games for the Runnin' Bulldogs, recorded 9 extra base hits, with a .239 BA, while posting a .314 OBP and .927 fielding percentage.
Elizabeth City, N.C. native, Samantha Harrell earned a GPA of 3.77 in the classroom, while pitching 15.2 innings, in 7 appearances with a 5.81 ERA.
In her junior campaign, Bristow, V.A. native, Ashley Wark led the team in the circle with 30 appearances, and a team leading 97.0 innings pitched, gathering 32 strikeouts. Academically, Wark also saw a successful year as she accounted for a cumulative GPA of 3.56.
Callie Thornton, a sophomore last season, started all 50 games for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Thornton collected nine extra-base hits and was tied for a team high of four homeruns. In the classroom, she recorded equally impressive numbers as her earned a 3.53 GPA.
The lone Runnin' Bulldog not returning to the mix this season following her graduation is Mackenzie Thompson. Thompson posted a 3.46 GPA in the classroom with recording a 3.85 ERA in 23 appearances with 18 games started, and 89.0 innings pitched.
