October 24, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb redshirt junior David Efianayi was named preseason second-team All-Big South Conference Tuesday afternoon, in conjunction with the league's annual basketball media day.
Efianayi (Orlando, Fla. / Ocoee HS) is Gardner-Webb's top returning scorer, and part of a veteran roster that returns 83.3 percent of its letterwinners from last year – which produced a 19-win season.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard averaged 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game last season, shooting an efficient 50.9 percent from the floor. Efianayi made 111 of his 154 free throws (72.1 percent) and knocked down 22-of-53 from long distance (41.5 percent).
His career-high came in a win over Howard in November, when he exploded for 31 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Efianayi came off the bench early in the season, scoring 20 points in a reserve role at Pittsburgh and 21 markers in a road win at Radford.
The athletic slasher excelled once he moved into the starting lineup as well, netting 20 or more points three times in that role.
Efianayi's efforts earned him honorable mention All-Big South Conference honors following the 2016-2017 regular season.
Through 52 career games, Efianayi has averaged 10.6 points and is shooting 50.3 percent during that span.
Gardner-Webb enters the 2017-2018 season with five consecutive winning seasons – its longest stretch since 1978-1983 – and will open up on Friday, November 10 at Miami (Fla.).
