GWU Men's Basketball To Host Wofford In Charity Exhibition For Disaster Relief
October 26, 2017 | Men's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb University men's basketball will host Wofford College in a charity exhibition game on Wednesday, November 1, to raise money for disaster relief.
Opening tip is set for 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. Tickets for the exhibition are $5 for adults, $2 for school-aged children and college students with valid ID. A special $15 rate for families is also planned.
All proceeds donated to Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief (https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/us-disaster-relief/). Additional donations will be accepted as well.
The game was added to the schedule following an NCAA exception that allowed programs to play in an additional preseason event with the specific purpose of raising funds for disaster relief.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return three starters and 10 of 12 letterwinners from a team that posted a 19-14 record and a fourth-place finish in the Big South Conference last season. Head coach Tim Craft will lead an experienced team – with seven men in either their third or fourth season of college basketball.
Gardner-Webb has posted five consecutive winning seasons, the program's best stretch since 1978-1983. The 'Dogs were picked fifth in the preseason Big South Conference poll, which was announced Tuesday in Charlotte.
"We are excited to have a chance to help a very important cause and look forward to hosting a very strong Wofford team on November 1," said head coach Tim Craft, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., who is in his fifth season in charge at Gardner-Webb.
"Four of our players and two of our staff members are from the State of Florida, so obviously the hurricane relief effort is close to our hearts. We encourage all of our fans and supporters to come out and donate to a very worthy cause while they take in what should be a fun and exciting basketball game."
Wofford also welcomes back three starters from a year ago, headlined by All-SoCon sharpshooter Fletcher McGee (18.6 ppg) and forward Cameron Jackson (12.6 ppg).
The Terriers, perennial contenders for the Southern Conference title under longtime head coach Mike Young, were tabbed fifth in the preseason Southern Conference poll.
