BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team concluded their regular season schedule this evening in dominant fashion as the Runnin' Bulldogs shutout Winthrop 6-0. Prior to the match, Gardner-Webb honored their six seniors:
Hunter Frey,
Marvin Mendy,
Joshua Rouse,
Shawn Bloch,
Marc-Kevin Schwenk and
William Liles.
Just 27 seconds into the match, Gardner-Webb Captain,
Alain Delgado recorded his first goal of the season as he fired a shot from 18 yards out into the upper 90.
Magnus Moldjord earned the assist to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the early lead.
Minutes later at the 5:19 mark,
Magnus Moldjord found the back of the net for the Runnin' Bulldogs as he received the cross from
Marc-Kevin Schwenk, who leads the conference in assists with eight.
Attacking Player of the Week,
Jack Hoey then joined in on the scoring action as he gathered a rebounded shot and pushed one beyond reach of the Eagles goalkeeper. Hoey's goal tonight in the 29
th minute would be good for his third in as many matches.
Severin Soerlie was credited with the assist.
To wrap up scoring in the first half, the Runnin' Bulldogs co-leading scorer
Severin Soerlie received the cross from
David Koprowski and connected for a goal from six yards out.
Leading 4-0 at the start of the second period,
Magnus Moldjord recorded his second goal of the night in the 48
th minute as Ishmael Guerrero sent the cross from the right side to Moldjord from inside the box.
In the final minutes of the match, senior
Joshua Rouse capped the scoring for Gardner-Webb as
Brian Stepanek found Rouse from the left side of the field allowing the senior to secure a spot in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs offense was in attack mode all night as they fired 17 shots with nine on goal.
Magnus Moldjord led the way as he recorded six shots with three on goals, while scoring two goals.
Severin Soerlie and
Joshua Rouse also tallied two shots on goal in the match.
The Winthrop offense recorded 16 shots in the match, with six on goal. Max Hasenstab and Rasmus Arousell both recorded two shots on goal for the Eagles.
Two Runnin' Bulldogs goalkeeper saw action between the posts tonight as Jacob Beyer recorded two saves in 55:52 minutes of play, while senior
William Liles collected three saves in 34:08 minutes in goal.
Gardner-Webb concludes regular season play at (8-6-2, 4-2-1 BSC) as Winthrop falls to (3-13-2) on the season.
The fifth seeded Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action this Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2:00 PM as they take on No. 2 seed Liberty in Lynchburg, VA for the Big South Conference tournament quarterfinals. In their last meeting on Sept. 26, Liberty topped Gardner-Webb 1-0 as Tresor Mbuyu scored the game winning goal in the 98th minute for Liberty.
