Runnin’ Bulldogs Outlast Davidson, 70-65, Friday Afternoon

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson's Justine Lyon would knock down a three pointer with six seconds remaining to pull the Wildcats within three points, but a pair of free throws by Tierra Huntsman would seal the contest to give Gardner-Webb a 70-65 win at Davidson on Friday afternoon.
 
Gardner-Webb (7-2) would lead by 11 points with 0:56 to go after a pair of successful free throws by Huntsman, but Davidson (3-7) would then go on a 13-5 run over the next 0:50 to trim their deficit within three markers.
 
The Wildcats would foul Huntsman immediately on the inbound play, and she would knock down the final two of her 11 makes at the line to give Gardner-Webb the five-point victory.
 
Huntsman led Gardner-Webb offensively, scoring 23 points on 5-of-14 shooting, as well as going 11-of-15 from the free throw line.  She also had a team-high seven boards along with six steals.
 
GWU had three other scorers reach double-digits, as Alexus Hill had 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting, Savannah Plentovich scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, and Ky'Asia Stanford scored 10 points on a 5-of-10 performance.
 
Gardner-Webb shot an even 48.0 percent for the game, making 24-of-50 attempts, and made 76.0 percent of its free throw attempts, going 19-for-25 from the charity stripe.
 
Davidson was held to a 37.0 percent performance from the floor, going 27-of-73 for the day, and the Wildcats only made eight trips to the free throw line, making 75.0 percent of their chances at 6-of-8.
 
Mackenize Latt led Davidson in scoring with 27 points on a 13-of-24 performance. She also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Both teams missed their first few shot attempts to start the game until Lyon scored on a put back layup with 8:31 on the clock.  GWU would answer on its next possession, as Huntsman would knock down a deep three pointer.  That basket put Huntsman over the 1,000-point mark for her career, the 22nd player in program history to reach that mark.
 
GWU would score five more unanswered points to build an 8-2 lead after another basket from long distance by Huntsman with 6:52 remaining, yet the Wildcats would respond with three unanswered baskets to tie the game at 8-8 with 2:23 on the clock.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs would close out the opening frame with a 6-0 run, with all points coming from the charity stripe to lead by a 14-8 score.
 
Gardner-Webb would expand its lead to 12 points after an early 8-0 run in the second period, capped by a Morgan Pointer layup with 5:27 on the clock that set the score at 24-12.  Both teams would trade baskets throughout the remainder of the quarter, as a layup by Stanford would set the score at 32-20 in GWU's favor at the half.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs would once again go on an early run at the onset of the third period, outscoring Davidson by a 7-2 margin to build a game-high 17-point lead at 39-22 with 6:54 remaining.  The Wildcats would fight back, closing the period on a 12-4 run, including eight unanswered points over the final 1:56 to pull within seven points at 43-36.
 
Hill would draw a foul to open the fourth period, and after missing her first attempt from the line, she would knock down her second attempt to record her 1,000th career point, the 23rd Runnin' Bulldog to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
 
GWU would lead by double-digits once more, holding an 11-point advantage with 5:50 to go after a driving layup by Savannah Plentovich put the score at 54-43.  The Wildcats would rally, pulling within five points at 55-50 with 3:33 remaining on a put back basket by Latt, but a layup by Stanford on the next possession would stop the initial run.
 
Davidson would send the Runnin' Bulldogs to the free throw line twelve times over the final 1:14 of play, and they would knock down 11 attempts to seal the game.  The Wildcats would continue to fight, knocking down three pointers during that stretch to pull within three points at 68-65 with six seconds remaining, yet Huntsman would make two free throws with five seconds on the clock to wrap up the game at 75-70.
 
Gardner-Webb remains on the road for its next contest, taking on Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in Emmitsburg, Md.
