Gardner-Webb Puts Five In Double Figures, Holds Off Hampton 80-79 Sunday

HAMPTON, Va. – David Efianayi scored 19 points to lead five men in double figures, and Gardner-Webb held off Hampton for an 80-79 road win Sunday afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-8) won on the road for the first time this season, with Sunday's tilt featuring 20 lead changes and six ties.

In addition to Efianayi's scoring punch, Gardner-Webb got 13 points from DJ Laster, 12 each from Liam O'Reilly and Christian Turner and 10 points from Jamaal Robateau for the win.

Gardner-Webb jumped out to a big early lead, starting the game on a 16-4 run to seize control. Hampton (4-8) caught fire midway through the half and surged in front itself, but a three-pointer by Christian Turner in the closing seconds of the half put the 'Dogs up 38-36.

Hampton's Austin Colbert tied the game at intermission, however, connecting on a layup at the buzzer for a 38-38 score.

The teams traded buckets, and leads, for much of the second half, with the Pirates leading by as many as six points with 10:58 to play after a Malique Trent layup. Gardner-Webb responded with a quick, 8-0 run to go up 60-58 when Eric Jamison converted an old-fashioned trifecta with 9:24 remaining, but Runnin' Bulldogs could not create another double digit lead.

Hampton tied the score twice more, but did not retake the lead from Gardner-Webb until 2:24 remained in the game. Greg Heckstall's three-pointer put the Pirates up 77-76 and forced a GWU timeout.

The Runnin' Bulldogs went quickly to Efianayi, and the Orlando, Fla., junior went to work – drawing a foul and making both free throws to put GWU back in front – for good – with 2:04 on the game clock. Efianayi's clutch jumper with 1:08 to play put Gardner-Webb up 80-77.

Hampton missed its final two chances at the lead from the field, with Heckstall's final shot at the buzzer off the mark.

Turner had the best game of his career at point guard, with six assists and only two turnovers to go with his career-best 12 points – which came on perfect 5-of-5 shooting.

Gardner-Webb was hampered for much of the game by foul trouble, which led to Laster fouling out and Hampton making 17-of-23 shots from the charity stripe.

The Runnin' Bulldogs made up for that discrepancy by making 50.0 percent from the floor (32-of-64) and 10-of-21 from long range (47.6 percent). Gardner-Webb also held a 38-35 edge on the glass.

Kalin Fisher led Hampton with 16 points and Jermaine Marrow added 14 – leading a group of five players in double digits. The Pirates shot 46.8 percent from the floor (29-of-62), made 17 free throws and made just 4-of-11 shots from three-point range.

Gardner-Webb will return home for its final pre-Christmas game, hosting Toccoa Falls on Wednesday morning at 11:00 am – part of special Education Day festivities in Paul Porter Arena.
