EMMITSBURG, Md. – Gardner-Webb knocked down a season-high ten three-point baskets en route to a 75-67 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-2) were 10-of-14 from long distance, while Mount St. Mary's (2-8) was just 6-of-26 from behind the three-point line.
Tierra Huntsman made a game-high four three pointers, going 4-of-5 from downtown, while
Carley Plentovich followed with a 3-of-4 performance from long distance.
Huntsman led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Alexus Hill added 15 points on a 6-of-15 day, while Plentovich also had 15 points off of the bench.
Ky'Asia Stanford also reached double-digits in scoring, recording a season-best 11 points.
Caroline Hummell scored a game-high 26 points for the Mountaineers, going 9-of-13 from the floor.
The Runnin' Bulldogs made 50.0 percent of their attempts from the floor on the afternoon, going 30-for-60. Mount St. Mary's shot at a 40.0 percent clip, going 24-for-60 for the day.
The opening period was tightly contested, as there were three lead changes and four ties. Mount St. Mary's would take a 13-11 lead with 4:35 on the clock after a layup by Hummell, and neither team would score until a three pointer by Hill with 12 seconds remaining gave GWU a 14-13 advantage.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would continue to prevent the Mountaineers from scoring in the second period, not allowing a basket until Daly Sullivan converted a layup with 3:14 on the clock. During that stretch, GWU scored 19 unanswered points to build a 17-point lead at 30-13 after a mid-range jumper by Hill with 3:39 to go.
Gardner-Webb would take a 40-22 lead into the locker room at the half after Plentovich knocked down a buzzer-beater from mid-court to end the second period.
The Runnin' Bulldogs shot an impressive 76.9 percent for the second period, going 10-for-13 from the floor, including a perfect 5-for-5 from long distance. Mount St. Mary's made just three baskets throughout the frame, going 3-for-11, shooting 27.3 percent.
GWU would push its lead to as high as 20 points in the third period, leading by that margin with 6:18 on the clock after a Plentovich basket set the score at 48-28, but Mount St. Mary's would rally, going on a 19-1 run to pull within two points at 49-47 with 1:55 remaining.
Huntsman would score on a driving layup on GWU's next possession to break the run, and the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on to finish the quarter with an eight-point advantage at 56-48.
Gardner-Webb would lead by as many as 13 points in the fourth period with 4:07 remaining after a Huntsman three pointer set the score at 70-57, and would go on to take the game by eight points, 75-67
The 8-2 start for Gardner-Webb is the team's best start since the 2008-09 season, in which the Runnin' Bulldogs got off to an identical start. That season saw GWU finish with an overall record of 28-5 and a Big South Conference regular season title and a WNIT appearance.
