BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A base hit by Paul Trick with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning broke up a perfect game bid by UMBC right-handed pitcher Jacob Christian, but the Runnin' Bulldogs were held scoreless, falling by a 6-0 score on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb (5-8) only managed two base hits throughout the contest, with Mickey Dugan earning a base hit to centerfield with one away in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UMBC (1-5) had a strong outing from Christian, who lasted 7.2 innings, allowing only two hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks.  The two hits he allowed were the only baserunners that the Retrievers allowed on the base paths all afternoon. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs had an effective outing from starting pitcher Bradley Hallman, who lasted 7.0 innings, allowing just one run with 11 strikeouts, while walking only two batters. 

Both teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Collin Stack gave UMBC a 1-0 lead on a RBI single through the left side of the field.

The Retrievers added an additional run in the top of the eighth when Conner Hax was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Stack. 

UMBC tacked on four runs in the top of the ninth inning, with a three-RBI double by AJ Wright putting the game out of reach. 

The Retrievers had eight base hits, led by Christian Torres who was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Gardner-Webb will return to action on Tuesday evening at Davidson.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
