CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Runnin' Bulldogs men's soccer team fell to the Cincinnati Bearcats tonight in their season opener by a score of 1-3.
The Bearcats opened the scoring with 27:17 left in the first half as David Sanz scored unassisted on a free kick from 20 yards out finding the left corner of the net. Darryn Commissiong of the University of Cincinnati would follow suit as he found himself one on one with a backtracking Gardner-Webb defender as he pushed one passed the Runnin' Bulldogs Goalkeeper.
Gardner-Webb joined in on the scoring action in the 62
nd minute of the match as
Magnus Moldjord scored the Runnin' Bulldogs first goal off of an assist by
Severin Soerlie as he crossed from the left side and shot from inside the 18 yard mark. Moldjord's lone goal wouldn't prove to be enough for GWU in the match.
Malik Suleman of Cincinnati would go on to pin another tally on the scoreboard for the Bearcats in the final minute of the match.
Head Coach
Tony Setzer shared his thoughts saying, "I thought there were moments we played extremely well. But there were also moments that we didn't connect the dots", which led to the downfall of the Runnin' Bulldogs tonight.
Gardner-Webb managed to get off 15 shots, while just four were on goal. Cincinnati countered with 17 shots, with nine of them being on goal. GWU's keeper Jacob Beyer played all 90:00 minutes in goal while recording three saves. The Bearcat keeper mirrored Beyer's saves with three, yet only allowed one goal.
"We are making progress, sometime the results don't go your way. This gives us a good idea of the standard we need to maintain throughout the season," said Setzer.
Falling to 0-1, Gardner-Webb travels to Macon, Ga. for their match against Wofford on Sept. 1 at 4:00 pm.
