MACON, Ga. – The Runnin' Bulldogs match against Mercer ended in a 1-1 overtime draw this afternoon at Bear Field.
Gardner-Webb put up one shot in the first period coming off the foot of
Severin Soerlie just 17 seconds into the match, which resulted in their lone goal of the match. Soerlie found the back of the net on a scissor kick from 18 yards out after the ball was mishandled by the Mercer defender.
GWU would go on to take three more shots in the second period, accounting for their four shots of the match. Three of the Runnin' Bulldogs shots were on goal.
Simen Olsen also had two shots for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with one shot on goal.
The Bears offense was in full force this afternoon tallying 23 shots, with five on goal in the match. Mercer Forward Will Bagrou, was the lone scorer for the Bears as he scored on the assist from Trenton Whitely as the ball rebounded to Bagrou on the free kick.
GWU Goalkeeper Jacob Beyer made four saves in the match. Jeremy Booth of Mercer tallied two saves for the Bears.
In a foul-heavy match, Gardner-Webb racked up 20 fouls as Mercer tallied 18 of their own.
Gardner-Webb took four corner kicks in the match, with Mercer taking seven.
Following a 3-1 loss last Friday in their season opener at Cincinnati, Gardner-Webb's record now stands at 0-1-1 on the season. Mercer is now (0-2-2).
The Runnin' Bulldogs welcome the Wofford Terriers to Greene-Harbison Stadium this Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 PM to make up their match that was originally scheduled for Sept. 1.
