Jordan Smith Named Big South Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's track and field senior Jordan Smith has been named the Big South Conference Indoor Men's Field Athlete of the Week for competition from January 15-21, as announced by the league office.

The 6-1 senior from Chesterfield, Va. set a pair of new personal records at this past weekend's Appalachian Open en route to first-place finishes in both the shot put and weight throw events.

In the shot put, Smith finished with a mark of 16.79 meters, which also ranked as the eighth-best distance for the event in Big South history. His previous best in the event was 16.67 meters, set at the 2016 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Smith's distance of 19.06 meters in the weight throw was 0.68 meters better than his previous PR of 18.38 meters set at the Appalachian Open in 2015.  It also is currently the best mark this season in the Big South by more than 2.50 meters.

Gardner-Webb returns to action this weekend at the 2018 Liberty Kickoff, hosted by Liberty University at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va. The two-day meet begins Friday afternoon at 12:30 pm and will resume on Saturday morning at 9:00 am.
