GWU's Bouwer Stars in FIBA U18 European Championships, Set to Play in 3x3 Games

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina. – Gardner-Webb freshman Robyn Bouwer recently led the Netherlands to a sixth-place finish at the FIBA U18 Division B Women's European Championships in Austria. Next up, she will compete in the 3x3 basketball games at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina beginning on October 6.
Bouwer, a 5-10 guard from Rotterdam, Netherlands, appeared in eight games in the championships, which were held from August 3-12, 2018. She averaged 9.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest. This marked the fourth year that she competed for the Netherlands, as she also played in the 2015 U16 Division A championships, the 2016 U16 Division B championships and the 2017 U18 Division B championships.
In the opening game of the championships, Bouwer shot 4-of-14 for nine points, while pulling down seven rebounds in a 52-39 loss to Montenegro.
Statistically, her best games came during the middle of the tournament, when she scored in double figures on three consecutive occasions.
Against Denmark, Bouwer played 30 minutes and shot 5-of-16 finishing the contest with 14 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists and steals. Her 14 points were a team-high as her squad earned a 62-60 victory, using a 13-6 fourth quarter run to secure the win.
Her best performance on the hardwood came in the Netherlands' fourth game as they took on Great Britain. Bouwer took 16 shots and made six, including a pair of attempts from beyond the arc. She scored a personal high of 17 points and narrowly missed out on a double-double, dishing out eight times in the 73-67 win. In addition, she pulled down four rebounds and recorded one blocked shot.
Following her strong showing against Great Britain, Bouwer led the Netherlands out of the group phase and into the quarterfinals with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting in a six-point win over Turkey.
Bouwer would score in double figures once more over the final three games, contributing 11 points in the Netherlands' final game of the tournament against Portugal. The Netherlands fell to Portugal, 71-44, and ended the tournament with a sixth-place finish.
Beginning on October 6, Bouwer will compete in the 3x3 basketball games at the U18 Youth Olympic Games for the Netherlands. Bouwer and her teammates are in Pool D along with Estonia, Czech Republic, Spain and Australia. The games will conclude with the championship on October 18.
