BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – With less than 30 days until the 2018-19 Gardner-Webb women's basketball season tips off, head coach Alex Simmons announced that the team will host an open practice on Tuesday, October 16.
Simmons and assistant coaches Danielle Bell, Garner Small and Chynna Turner will welcome fans and community members inside the 3,500-seat Paul Porter Arena beginning at 5:30 p.m. that afternoon.
"We are extremely excited to open up our home to some of the best basketball fans in the country," said Simmons, who is in her first season as the Runnin' Bulldogs' head coach. "The support of Gardner-Webb is truly a blessing to our staff and players. Having this open practice will give fans a preview of what's to come this season and show everyone how hard the team has been working since April."
At the open practice, fans will get their first look at four of the five newcomers on the 2018-19 squad, headlined by University of Miami transfer and graduate student Neydja Petithomme.
Attendees will also see Jhessyka Williams (Augusta, Ga. / Laney HS), Mikayla Dyson (Lincolnton, N.C. / Lincolnton HS) and Anna Munoz-Vidueira (Hospitalet De Llobregat, Spain / Sant Josep Obrer) on the hardwood for the first time.
Freshman Robyn Bouwer (Rotterdam, Netherlands / CTO Amsterdam) is currently in Argentina representing the Netherlands in the 3x3 games at the U18 Youth Olympic Games.
Returners Ky'Asia Stanford (Bear, Del. / Carver Academy), and twins Carley Plentovich and Savannah Plentovich (Clearwater, Fla. / Calvary Christian) are the team's top returners. Stanford leads all returners with an average of 9.2 points per game last season.
Gardner-Webb will open the season on Tuesday, November 6 at the University of Florida. The late-morning tip is set for 11 a.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs' home opener will take place on Friday, November 9 at 6 p.m. against Warren Wilson.
