FARMVILLE, Va. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team had its two-match winning streak snapped at Longwood on Saturday night, as the Lancers scored twice in the final 15 minutes en route to a 2-0 victory.
"We had positive momentum coming into this match, but it's tough to win when you only take one shot on goal," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "We did a great job of holding them scoreless for the majority of the contest, but they were able to capitalize late."
Longwood (4-9-0, 2-3-0 Big South Conference) had three shots on goal in less than 25 minutes of action to begin the match, but Gardner-Webb keeper
Daniel Husa saved them all before the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to move to their attacking third of the field.
Gardner-Webb (3-7-1, 3-2-0s BSC) took its first attempt 25 minutes into the match when
Magnus Moldjord had his shot blocked.
Over the final 20 minutes of the opening period,
Jack Hoey attempted a pair of shots but could not convert, while
Mads Rismoen's attempt was wide of the net.
At the intermission, the contest remained scoreless.
Longwood had a chance to break the tie in the 53
rd minute, but Husa made his fourth stop of the night to keep the home team from taking the lead. He would do the same less than 10 minutes later when he saved an attempt by the Lancers' Willy Miezan.
Oskar Wang took Gardner-Webb's first attempt of the second half with less than 30 minutes remaining, and Hoey took an unsuccessful shot with only 15 minutes on the clock.
Longwood found the back of the net in the 78
th minute when Ryan Flemming converted from 30 yards out to give the Lancers the 1-0 lead.
After a trio of Gardner-Webb players were unsuccessful at netting the equalizer, Longwood's Jeremy Jaquier dribbled to the middle of the box and got past Husa to score LWU's second goal with just five minutes left in the match.
Hoey took the Runnin' Bulldogs lone shot on goal with 4:49 remaining, but it was saved, and the 'Dogs fell, 2-0.
Husa made six saves in goal for GWU, while Hoey attempted a team-high five shots.
Gardner-Webb will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Atlanta, Georgia to face off against Georgia State. The non-conference match is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16.
