Jack Hoey scored his sixth goal of the year in the 73
rd minute, but it wasn't enough as the Georgia State Panthers scored the game-winner just two minutes later to earn the 2-1 over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
"We struggled in the first half and gave up an early goal, but our guys responded well in the second period," said coach
Tony Setzer. "Jack (Hoey) got a good look and was able to net the equalizer, but when Georgia State pulled ahead again, we just couldn't get an opportunity to score."
Gardner-Webb (3-8-1, 3-2-0 Big South) took the first four shots of the game, but only one, an attempt by Hoey in the 17
th minute, was on goal.
Georgia State (8-4-1, 1-0-1 Sunbelt) attempted its first shot in the 20
th minute and scored three minutes later to take a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period.
The Panthers' Logan Luque took a pass from Frank Rosenwald in the right side of the box and scored his first goal of the season.
For Gardner-Webb,
David Moreno and
Brian Stepanek would take shots in the first half, but neither player could net the equalizer, and the 'Dogs trailed after 45 minutes of play, 1-0.
Roman Eddleman took the Runnin' Bulldogs' first shot on goal in the second half in the 60
th minute, but it was Hoey who netted the equalizer less than 15 minutes later.
Hoey scored in transition from the left side of the box to knot the match at one, but Gardner-Webb's lead was short lived.
In the 75
th minute, Georgia State's Aris Briggs tapped in a shot off a cross from Dylan Myers to put the Panthers back in front, and the visitors would hold steady until horn sounded in the 90
th minute.
The Runnin' Bulldogs attempted 10 shots in the match, led by Hoey and
Mads Rismoen who each took two. Five of Gardner-Webb's 10 shots were on goal. Georgia State had nine attempts and placed four on goal.
Daniel Husa saved two shots for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Paul Tyson stopped four shots for the Panthers.
Gardner-Webb will play return to action on Saturday, October 20 at 4 p.m. when it welcomes the Campbell Fighting Camels to Greene-Harbison Stadium for a Big South Conference match.
