BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – After a three-match road trip, the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team returned to its home field on Saturday, but the visiting Campbell Fighting Camels earned the 1-0 win thanks to a goal in the 60
th minute.
"We struggled to get quality looks on goal today," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "At the same time, we did a good job limiting their chances and were able to hold them scoreless for a large portion of the match. After they scored, we had some looks and threatened but just couldn't convert. We'll move on and get ready for Presbyterian next week."
In the first half, Campbell had two shots on goal in less than 25 minutes, but
Daniel Husa stopped both.
For Gardner-Webb,
Oskar Wang nearly converted in the 29
th minute, but his attempt was deflected by Campbell's Sam Lechuga just to the right of the post. Wang also attempted two corner kicks for the Runnin' Bulldogs, but the 'Dogs did not manage a shot off either corner.
Husa made his final save of the first half with 45 seconds left in the period to keep the Fighting Camels off the scoreboard. The two teams headed to the break in a scoreless tie.
In the second period, the two teams traded shots over the first 15 minutes. In the 60
th minute, JJ Donnelly converted for Campbell, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. After Thibaut Jacquel's shot was stopped by Husa, Donnelly scored his sixth goal of the year off the rebound.
Following Campbell's goal, the Runnin' Bulldogs had ample chances to net the equalizer over the 30 minutes of play.
In the 75
th minute alone, 'the Dogs managed a shot on goal and two corner kicks but could not tie the contest.
Gardner-Webb's final shot on goal came in the 84
th minute from
Ismael Guerrero, but Lechuga made his third and final save of the night to earn the 1-0 victory.
The loss drops Gardner-Webb to 3-9-1 overall and 3-3 in Big South play. Campbell improves to 6-7-1 and 3-3 in the BSC.
The Fighting Camels outshout the Runnin' Bulldogs, 13-9 and 7-3 in shots on goal. Â Gardner-Webb had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Husa stopped six of Campbell's shots, while Lechuga saved all three of Gardner-Webb's shots on goal.
Gardner-Webb will return to action next Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m. against Presbyterian. Prior to the match, the team will honor its five seniors –
