Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Oskar Wang Leads Gardner-Webb to 2-1 Win Over Radford on Wednesday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Oskar Wang scored twice and Magnus Moldjord recorded an assist as the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team topped Big South Conference opponent Radford, 2-1, on Wednesday evening.

"It was a good win for our team," said head coach Tony Setzer. Magnus played a nice ball to Oskar, and we got the lead early." Even when Radford tied it, we battled back and were able to limit their chances. Daniel Husa came up big in goal with back-to-back saves late in the second."

The victory is Gardner-Webb's first triumph over the Highlanders since the 2010 season. With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs move to 2-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big South. Radford falls to 2-6 and 1-2 in the BSC.

Without much possession through the first 25 minutes of the first half, the two teams only combined for three shots until Wang put Gardner-Webb on the board in the 29th minute.

His first goal of the match came after Moldjord crossed the ball from the edge of the box into the center, where Wang converted to put the home team in front.

Although Wang gave GWU the lead, it was short lived as Radford would score less than five minutes later.  The Highlanders' Kieran Roberts netted the equalizer in the 33rd minute, scoring off a free kick from 20 yards away.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' final shot on goal in the first half came from Ismael Guerrero but was scooped up by Sam Farrell as the teams headed into the intermission tied at one.

Just 90 seconds into the second period, Husa made a stop in goal to keep the game tied, and Gardner-Webb pulled in front in the 49th minute.

After drawing a foul, Wang earned a free kick from just outside the 18 and placed a shot around the left side of Radford's five-man wall and into the bottom corner of the net. Wang's goal would turn out to be the game-winner and gave Gardner-Webb a 2-1 lead.

Radford attempted seven shots over the final 40 minutes of the second half, and threatened with less than 20 minutes remaining, but back-to-back stops by Husa in the 74th and 75th minutes helped preserve the win for Gardner-Webb.

The physical contest featured a combined 37 fouls and 11 cards. The Highlanders outshot the 'Dogs, 12-9 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal. Radford held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, Husa made five stops, while Farrell saved three shots for the Highlanders.

Next up, the 'Dogs will travel to Winthrop on Wednesday, October 10 for another Big South Conference match. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
