'Dogs Defeat Winthrop, 4-1, in Mid-Week Action

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Jack Hoey scored twice, while Mads Rismoen and David Moreno each added a goal as the Runnin' Bulldogs topped Winthrop, 4-1, in Big South Conference action on Tuesday night.

"It was a good win for us," said head coach Tony Setzer. It's nice to have picked up three wins in conference play. Having three different players score really shows that we have a solid attack."

Moldjord took the Runnin' Bulldogs' first shot of the match in the seventh minute, but it was Jack Hoey who converted for the 'Dogs 11 minutes later.

Hoey, a former Big South Attacking Player of the Week winner, netted his fourth goal of the season. Dylan Dominguez and Ismael Guerrero sent the ball to Hoey who put it in the net by the back post to give Gardner-Webb the lead.

After Hoey's goal, Guerrero and Moldjord would take shots but neither player could put their shot on goal.

Winthrop took three shots on goal following Hoey's goal and Daniel Husa saved two before the Eagles netted the equalizer with just 4:48 until the half.

The Eagles' lead was extremely short lived as Hoey put the Runnin' Bulldogs back in front just 20 seconds after Winthrop's Marc Carreras scored.

Hoey received a pass from Oskar Wang, dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and placed a shot into the upper 90 from just outside the 18 to give GWU a 2-1 lead at the half.

In the second period, Gardner-Webb did not attempt a shot until the 73rd minute, but a header from Rismoen wound up in the back of the net, giving the 'Dogs a 3-1 advantage. Rismoen's goal was from the center of the box off a corner kick by Moldjord.

Seven minutes later, Moreno scored his first career goal to extend Gardner-Webb's lead to three goals, where it would remain for the duration of the contest.

The 4-1 win moves Gardner-Webb to 3-6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big South. Winthrop falls to 2-8 and 1-4 in BSC play.

Husa made six saves for the Runnin' Bulldogs and allowed just one goal. Winthrop's Chandler Gaunce saved one attempt.

The Eagles outshot Gardner-Webb, 12-10 and took seven shots on goal, while the 'Dogs managed five.

Next up, the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Longwood for a 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 13.
