'Dogs Sneak Past UNC Asheville, 2-1, In Overtime

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It took three minutes of extra time to decide a winner, as Jack Hoey scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to help the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs sneak past UNC-Asheville, 2-1, on the final night of the regular season.
Gardner-Webb (4-10-1, 4-4 Big South Conference) got on the board first thanks to Petter Johansen's goal in the 27th minute to make it a 1-0 contest.
Johansen had his initial shot saved, but scored off the deflection to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead. Oliver Noevik crossed the ball to Johansen and Asheville's Tyler Moore batted the ball away but bck to Johansen who converted on the rebound.
"Petter did a great job getting us ahead early," said head coach Tony Setzer. "We had a number of good looks in the first half, and it was nice to convert and take the lead before the half."
Ismael Guerrero had a pair of shots for Gardner-Webb before the horn sounded to end the first period, but Moore saved the first attempt, and Guerrero's second shot was high.
UNC Asheville (2-13-2, 0-8-0 Big South) attempted six shots in the opening period, but Daniel Husa saved both of the Bulldogs' looks on goal to keep the home team from netting the equalizer in the opening half.
In the second period, Asheville would get on the board and tie the contest despite five attempts by the Runnin' Bulldogs – three from Jack Hoey and one each from Mads Rismoen and David Moreno – in the first 20 minutes.
In the 69th minute, Asheville's Izaiah Vignali converted with an open net to tie the match at one.
Over the remaining 20 minutes, UNCA had a pair of attempts, including one that hit the post in the 76th minute, while Gardner-Webb's lone shot came from Moreno with just 13 seconds remaining and was blocked.
In overtime, it did not take long to decide who would be victorious. Hoey scored his seventh goal of the year in the 94th minute to give the 'Dogs the 2-1 win.
"Asheville had some momentum towards the middle of the second period and was able to capitalize," added Setzer. "Even once they scored, I felt like we did a good job holding steady and getting some nice chances. Jack came up big for us in overtime. Now, we'll get ready for the Big South tournament."
Gardner-Webb outshout UNCA, 23-12 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal. UNCA's Moore stopped six shots, while Husa earned the victory and saved four attempts.
With the regular season now complete, the Runnin' Bulldogs will wait to learn the outcome of the remainder of tonight's games before the seedings for the upcoming Big South Conference tournament are released.
