Gardner-Webb Volleyball Inks Five to 2019 Class

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball program has received five official commitments in the early signing period, welcoming Sophia Bolden (Whitmore Lake, Mich. / South Lyon East HS), Gwynith Brooks (Hickory, N.C. / Fred T. Foard HS), Kennedy Dickens (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood HS), Ashley Downer (Hendersonville, N.C. / West Henderson HS), and Delaney McCullough (Asheville, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds HS) to its 2019 recruiting class, as announced by GWU head coach Leo Sayles on Thursday afternoon.
Sophia Bolden, a four-year letterman for South Lyon East High School, has earned Lakes Valley Conference (LVC) All-Conference honors on three occasions. Bolden helped lead South Lion East to a 28-7-1 record this past season.
Gwynith Brooks helped lead Fred T. Foard High School to back-to-back appearances in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state 2A quarterfinals. Brooks has been the team captain for two seasons and earned All-Conference and Offensive Player of the Year honors following her junior season.
Kennedy Dickens, a four-year varsity starter at Ravenwood High School, was named one of the 2018 Top-20 Players to Watch in the Nashville area by The Tennessean. Dickens earned All-District honors each of the past three seasons while leading Ravenwood to the TSSAA Division I Class AAA State Championship match in 2017.
Ashley Downer, the 2018 Western Mountain Athletic Conference (WMAC) Co-Player of the Year, has been a key part of West Henderson High School's success on the court. Downer earned WMAC All-Tournament team honors the past two seasons and was named the tournament MVP in 2018. In 2017, Downer was named to the All-WNC Volleyball second-team and the Henderson Times-News All-Area team.
Delaney McCullough, also the 2018 WMAC Co-Player of the Year, is the all-time leading blocker for A.C. Reynolds High School, setting the career blocks mark at 260. A three-time WMAC All-Conference honoree, McCullough has been the team captain the past two years and has also been named a NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete twice.
